Turn by turn navigation

Hi upgraded from my 920xt to a 5S Plus today and trying to work out turn by turn navigation. I used to upload tcx maps to the 920xt and it'd give me tbt directions using an arrow and whatever text I'd put on the turn setting using plotaroute.com but when I follow a map on my 5S Plus I just get an arrow at the bottom of the screen with no text. Being a much more advanced watch I thought the 5S Plus would do at least the same as the 920xt?? Or am I missing something?

Cheers
  • Based on what I've seen in the forums, this is how navigation works on the current-gen watches, when turn-by-turn directions are provided in advance (i.e. especially for watches without onboard maps). I think you can add the data field Navigation > Next Waypoint to see the name of the next waypoint tho.

Of course, as your 5S Plus has onboard maps, it is also able to do routing on the fly, which should include street names afaik. I don't have a 5S Plus to try this with, but I think if you set the option Routing > Courses > Use the Map, you should get street names in your turn directions (based on the onboard maps).

    Courses
Sets how you navigate courses using the device. Use the Follow Course option to navigate a course exactly as it appears, without recalculating. Use the Use Map option to navigate a course using routable maps, and recalculate the route if you stray from the course.

Anyone who has a 5X / 5 Plus, please feel free to correct what I said.

That's great thanks. I've used the watch a few times since posting, using a course that I've designed in plotaoute.com and I've found that the watch does notify you of turns with a pop up direction arrows so long as I've put this on the cue sheet on plotaoute. Also unlike where my 920xt notifies any text with a pop up the 5s Plus puts the text on the actual map... OK when not moving fast but would be hard to read if running or biking. Tbh I'm not too convinced on the battery life either... OK in watch mode but when using GPS it's not too good!

    Cheers
  • No worries. Does the Next Waypoint field work for you? The text might be bigger there.
