Tool for making routes like Heatmaps for Suunto

I don't know how familiar people here are with Suunto heatmaps and route creator. It works the same way as for Garmin, but when you choose to create a new route, all you have to do is to tap a point pretty near the road/trail you want to follow, and the program automatically moves your selected point so it matches the nearest road/trail.

I've tried to create routes with Garmin Explore, but this just draws straight lines and doesn't help much. So, does anyone know about an app or a program to easily create routes that can be transferred to the Garmin device?
  • I assume you want to make tracks to follow, running, hiking or on mtb?
I always use this site, super easy. Just draw the track, save it on your hd and copy it to your Garmin. Easy Peasy

  • Thanks for your reply.
Well, kunne of. But this does the same as Garmin Explore. When you draw lines between two waypoints, it takes the shortest distance between them. In Suunto map creator, the drawing between the waypoints automatically follows the trails shown on the map.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1457687.png
  • You draw the track by hand as granular as you want. I do this all the time to make offroad/enduro tracks of a couple of hundred kilometers. It's a bit of work but my tracks are always spot on.

But maybe you want something else.
  • Thanks.
I found an app that was pretty good. Would really recommend "EasyRoute". Great for making tracks and does easily transfer to your watch.
  • I recommend using Garmin Connect Courses and you can use popularity routing
  • I have been using GC Courses also and setup some routes. Now problems with that as long you stay in buildup areas. But when setting up some routes in wooded areas I ran in some annoying stuff. I also tried to switch maps source (Google, Here, OSM). Here maps is useless as it does not show roads, path in wooded areas on there maps. OSM have way more details then the Google maps. So I tried to setup a route with OSM in GC. But when using "Follow Roads" it will only make the route following the paths that are marked with the gray-white marks as soon you stray off it will not work. When using freehand it works but alot more labout intens. It would be nice if they had the "Follow Roads" working also on the unmarked roads/path.
  • How realistic is it to expect Garmin, or indeed any route creation tool to "Follow Roads" to work if there is no marked road/ path to follow?
  • That is indeed not realistic. But if in the OpenStreetMaps the roads/path are clearly visible then I think you can expect with 99% certainty that those are physicaly there. But we are getting off topic.
