Questions of a newbie owner

Hello all! I m a new owner of a Garmin 5x plus and i get to know it better. I have some questions to make and i must thank you in advance if i get them all replied.

1. Has anyone put the Garmin 5xplus in the open wide salty sea? i m very afraid of the safety of my device. I hope noone had any problem. I found some protection caps to protect the place were we charge the watch. Do you use it ? do you think it is needed? did you swim without any other protection?

2. i ve noticed differences between my real steps and the ones counted from watch while i am at home. But i read somewhere that any move of the wrist is included in the daily steps counting. is that right? that also happens while i run outside on GPS mode?

3. i still havent found how i turn my GPS or BLUETOOTH on. Concerning the GPS is it only into the menu - settings - apps - running settings - GPS (and i choose GPS ONLY/NORMAL)
Do i have to do smth in the GPS thats should make accuration better.

4. what can i do for counting automatically laps when i run in a stadium? do i always have to push the lap button to count the laps?

5. what app should i choose to count calories on a power plate ?

6. when i run i listen to the sound warnings in my lanuage (greek) and when it wants to say that i run in 9:06 it says "9 june" ->great? Does it have to do with Greek translation or is is 9th of June ? :-p

7. is there a way to be watching my sleep status in menu - apps and not only in my mobile ?

thanks in advance for your time as well as for your kind replies

best regards

It is ok to swim with the watch in sea water. Make sure to observe some precautions, though:
    1. Do not press buttons under water.
    2. Avoid strong water stream jets, like during water skiing or similar high-speed water sports.
    3. Rinse the watch in fresh water after use in sea water.
You don't need to use any protector. A protector only helps to prevent getting dirt into the charging port, but the charging port itself is water tight.

    2. i ve noticed differences between my real steps and the ones counted from watch while i am at home. But i read somewhere that any move of the wrist is included in the daily steps counting. is that right? that also happens while i run outside on GPS mode?

Any rhytmic motion of the wrist will trigger steps. Outdoors or indoor, GPS on or off, doesn't matter.

GPS turns on only if you select a sports profile that has GPS set to on.
You can try to improve GPS accuracy by enabling GLONASS or GALILEO, but in most circumstances you won't notice any difference.

    4. what can i do for counting automatically laps when i run in a stadium? do i always have to push the lap button to count the laps?

Yes, you have to press the button manually.

    5. what app should i choose to count calories on a power plate ?

I'd go for "Cardio" or "Other".

    Probably.

    7. is there a way to be watching my sleep status in menu - apps and not only in my mobile ?

You mean sleep status on the watch? No, there is no way to do it.

ah! Mr Tmk2 deeply thanks for your time and good will to reply to a newbie! i deeply appreciate it!

Concerning this : Any rhytmic motion of the wrist will trigger steps. Outdoors or indoor, GPS on or off, doesn't matter.
this means that i will always seem to make more steps, right? (but as i re-think of it, when you re running you usually move those hands hard, so this means that running may be accurate, but your daily steps may seem more inaccurate.right?

and concerning this : GPS turns on only if you select a sports profile that has GPS set to on.
You can try to improve GPS accuracy by enabling GLONASS or GALILEO, but in most circumstances you won't notice any difference

    you mean the setting : gps + glonass / gps + galileo,right?

Many many many thanks for your reply !!!!

Correct, more or less. You will never get a 100% accurate daily step count, but with some luck and proper use it will reflect your daily activity level.

    Correct.
  • If Garmin's Greek translation is as bad as their Danish, you should avoid it and go for English instead. They translate word for word, and don't get the context right. Seem that this happened to you too in you example: The numbers were translated as if they were a date, without checking if the context would fit a date.

yes ! i guess that this is the main reason why it translates me some numbers to months ! :) i ll try it in english i guess....

A new question has came up....how about the altimeter ? should i callibrate it everytime i want to see the height of a location or i just do it once ? do you know ?

thanks so much for your reply in any case my friend !

  • The altimeter needs calibration every time you use it. It works by measuring variations in the ambient air pressure, and the air pressure is never constant, so frequent calibration is needed.

The good news is that the watch can be set up to do this calibration by itself, once per night if it has a Bluetooth connection to your phone, and also every time you do a GPS activity. As far as I remember, this automatic calibration is the default setup of the watch.
