Altimeter auto calibration ON or OFF?

Hi,

I went for a 7 mile hike today. I calibrated the altimeter with DEM at the beginning of the hike and set the auto calibration to ON.

When I finished I had a look at the altitude profile and the altitude for the last couple of miles was way out (+90m). The rest was reasonable. That part of the trail ran by the steep side of a hill in a wooded area. The GPS reception was not that great at the time so probably what happened is that there was an error in the GPS location at the time of calibration that resulted in a big error in the altitude coming from the DEM due to the steep terrain.

If this is the case I believe that the best results will be achieved by setting the auto calibration to OFF for these types of activities.

What are your thoughts?
