Issues with brand new Fenix 5 plus

Hi all,

in case I am repeating the subject, please direct me to correct one.

----------

I bought new Fenix 5 plus on Friday and I am disappointed so far. Did two outdoor runs (hideous GPS track, over 1 km added distance and completely incorrect pace) one indoor cycyling (wats spikes to over 65k) and noticed massive amount of steps added during driving a car. Do you guys have this kind of problems as well?

Not sure want to do at this point. Wait till new 6.51 firmware or return and go for forerunner 935?

Can you help me out?

Best,
MX
  • Are you on the latest firmware? (Plug in to PC/Mac with Garmin Express installed to check) As I recall, there were some oddities like this seen with early device and GPS software versions (although they only make the tracks messy, they don’t negatively impact distance or pace).
  • Hi!

Yes, i have 6.0.0.0 version of the software installed. I double checked the distance of the runs with google maps, that’s why they are incorrect. What is more Fenix told me that I my pace was less than 3 min/km, which would mean that I have to go to hospital as my max pace is around 5:40min/km.
  • The spikes for indoor cycling have been attended to with the current beta release 6.51. Not sure when the public release will occur, but probably not too far away so I can't see any reason not to install it. You might also want to check what version of GPS you have - Go to Settings, System, About. Can't remember of the top of my head what the current version is but 2.40 or something rings a bell, might even be 2.5.

As you are down there in the Northern Hemisphere it might be worth looking at the other GPS options to see if that Improves things. Note also, that GPS tracks tend to be more 'wonky' at low speeds. They will also appear worse when zoomed in. You are likely to see better results at faster speeds over longer distances - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3376039898?fullscreen=true

I have seen anomalies like yours but not for a long time. If you have not already done so, put your device outside with a clear view of the sky. Select an activity requiring GPS, go to the start screen - you need not start the activity, and leave it outside for 15 mins or more.
  • katalonczyk_92 If you don't want maps, garmin pay and music then go for the 935 - much better battery life, better GPS tracks and lighter/thinner otherwise persist with the 5+ for me overall the GPS gives acceptable results for running and cycling and I can live with the shorter battery life
  • Hi guys,

many thanks for help! Much appreciated!

my gps settings shows 2.30 version, so clearly that needs to be updated. This is done by express right? Haven’t done such in my old forerunner 230.

JSRUNNER_ I love the Fenix 5 plus, but needs to get through those issue not to be constantly frustrated.
  • katalonczyk_92 my updates occur over bluetooth via phone - depends how you have set it up - I am on 2.50 GPS - you can do it also by pluuging in via usb to a PC and using Express
  • Are you sure about 2.50 for GPS? I'm on 2.30 GPS but 2.50 for WiFi

    Same here.
  • Gr4z R_Tellis I am on a Beta test watch so I suspect that may be the reason
  • Thank all of you for bringing this to my attention. After reading this thread, I went to check the version and found out that the new GPS software did not make it to Express but is available via WebUpdater. We are currently working on correcting this but if someone would like to try out the 2.50 GPS software on their device, feel free to get it through WebUpdater.
