Speed up turn by turn prompts

Before I went running at the weekend on a new route, I setup a course and sync'd it with my 5+. When out running the watch was prompting me to turn ahead of the actual turn, like it normally does ~50m from the junction, but when I actually got to the junction it was not prompting me until after I passed it.

Is there anyway I can change this? I think it's just a little bit slow to react (or I run too fast :))

Thanks
  • So which is best when say running in a city/town with multiple junctions?

    No idea.

I use "Follow Course" which pops up a small little notification at the bottom of the screen. A lot of things I do are circular route wise, so "By Map" seems to get excited that my start point is close to my end point and recaculate the route for the shortest distance negating the planned route.

Follow Course works out turns by the degree of change in direction. So if you're using this mode, the turns need to be much sharper for it to recognise them as a turn.

Whereas By Map appears to be more like your standard GPS navigation and will be aware of the actual map.

If someone could tell me how to use the By Map with circular routes, that'd be great.
  • I think I use 'follow course' anyway but am out for a lunch time run soon so will test it again and report back.
  • OK I set my watch to 1sec recording (rather than 'smart') and double checked it was on 'follow course'. The turn prompts seemed a little better, although they were still after the junctions! Ah well, another feature that doesn't really work.

What GPS setting do you have for running? It's (fairly) well known that GPS devices stuggle in tight streets, and high buildings, and can have slightly wonky current location due to signals bouncing off buildings. You might, if you don't have it turned on already, find Glonass (I believe is supposed to be better in built up areas) helps. Otherwise I can't think of what else to suggest.
  • I am in England, so I set GPS+Galileo. I was in a town, but the buildings were just 1 or 2 storeys. I will try it when out in the countryside at the weekend.
  • My experience has been pretty positive with the navigation during a run. I'm not sure if I've done something different but my settings are:

    GPS+Glonass / Galileo
    1 second recording
I created a course via the Garmin website and uploaded to the watch
Start a run picking a course I want to use and head off

I get a notification to tell me (ahead of time) to turn right or left, and if I recall correctly get a notification to turn when I'm on the corner.
I also get notifications to tell me that I'm off course if I stray too far from the course or go the wrong way. The former is slightly annoying when you can't run exactly where the watch thinks you should be e.g. running alongside closed off portion of the road.

The one thing I will say about all this though is that my runs typically take me into very open areas, not too many buildings and definitely not high rises.

When you say turn by turn - is the routing navigation being done "Follow Course" or "By Map" ?

Because from what I understand, those have different visual presentation and different algorithms for prompting.

Good question. I had two horrible experiences using TBT with Follow Course for trail running. My watch would alert me every time the trail veered left or right, which meant I got a turn alert every 5 seconds for the entire run. I have not been able to try TBT By Map because it never seems to load properly when I test from home.
  • I just upgraded from Fenix 5 to fenix 5 plus, and had this issue this weekend too.
Just changed gps recording to 1 sec, lets see how it goes next time i run a course
  • I've just had a 26km trail run following a course (which loaded to the map) I'd uploaded. I was not aware of an excessive number of TBT instructions despite the nature of the course, especially when it got a bit twisty. It certainly was not alerting me
every time the trail veered left or right
only when a significant turn was ahead.

Set to 1s recording, GPS only as up here in the Southern Hemisphere that works as well as GPS+any of the other alternatives.
