Horrible GPS accuracy when walking, anyone has the same problem?

The GPS track when walking is so bad and zigzaggy that I am literally ashamed other people see it. On a 850USD device.

I am using the 5X+ with the latest 6.0 official firmware, I have restarted the watch, tried smart and one second GPS recording and all three modes, GPS, +Glonass and +Galileo. All to no avail.

The track produced looks ridiculous regardless of whether I walk in the forest, in the woods or open fields with no obstructions.

Please note one that I walked with my daughter who has a 735XT, as well as some friends with Amazfot Stratos, and both don’t exhibit these problems, just like my Fenix 3 did not. When I increase speed, like riding a bike the problem disappears.

Garmin could you you please fix this ridiculousness? Or is my device faulty? ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1444373.png ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1444374.png ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1444375.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1444376.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1444377.jpg
  • I must say I'm really disappointed on this device's accuracy. My previous device was a Polar m400 which performed so much better in terms of precision and consistency. I usually run with friends, so I can compare my readings with them and I must say that mine is the only watch messing up all the data. Total distance is always 5 to 10% lower the the others, and current pace.. well, it's awkward. I never, ever have a reading that can be considered fairly accurate, to the point that it's just useless and frustrating. Tell me what use do I have for a watch that has a constant 30" to 60" mins/km error. I can't use it for training obviously. Even my friend's 40€ Xiaomi is doing so much better! That's unacceptable.
I'm considering to go back to my old polar for running and use the F5 for other activities, but I do feel conned here.

  • Unfortunately the distance accuracy problem doesn't look like it is fixable. The Gamin employees fained concern for a little while, but now have they have dropped off the map. The distance accuracy problem has been an issue across most Fenix models, especially when used in wooded trails. 5-15% short distance, in wooded trails, is pretty normal and consistent. It's most likely a hardware issue and not fixable with the current design. If that's a deal breaker for you, I'd try and get a refund.
  • Unfortunately It's not possible for me to have a refund, so I only have left the option to sell it and buy a model from another company. But it just make me so angry they go on selling so pricey devices that are not able to do the main thing they are made to do.

    Can anyone look at this
    https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-5-5s/1451743-current-pace-all-wrong-possible-cause
and tell me if they see a point?

Seems like the speed of the wrist moving is causing problems for the calculation based on what is written. It’s entirely plausible.

Here is three records of the exact exact same walk two I went left at the start one I went right. The path is fixed so the distance should be exact. It is winter and the watch is under several layers which could impact the distance calculation. I noticed there is more variation then I would like on distance but weather and clothing could play a factor
  • It's got to be something like, as you said, the speed of the wrist. I'm looking to find a way to have other people reproduce this same behavior in order to make a proper complaint.
I believe Garmin Support will not take this seriously otherwise.
  • Did a long walk yesterday to test this issue out. (again) Used my Fenix5X+ fw 6.51 gps+gallileo. Also used my iphone 6 with polar beat at the same time. Iphone recorded 12560m and F5 recorded 12540m. 0,159 % difference, or 20m is for me VERY accurate. Most parts of my track was open sky, but parts were partly in forest and mountains. Just sharing my experience.

The problem i have seen with the F5X+ during walks is not distance, but immediate pace. Distance (and average pace) is usually okay.
  • I suspect it's a function of GPS at lower speeds than anything else. However, since there is only a 3% discrepancy I really don't see a problem. It might pay you to spend some time reading up about consumer GPS performance. I think if you do that, you'll find that your results are very good.
    1. I have the same problem with my fenix 3.hr. walking will produce really bad tracks but running did not . It is  a bit weird.
