Running Power

Hi,

This is not exactly a F5+ question but I didn’t know where to put it.

I really want to get into Running with Power but I’m undecided between the very expensive Stryd Pod or Garmin’s own Running Dynamics Pod.

More specifically, if I were to buy the Garmin one (which is reasonably priced) how can I calculate my target Power that I should mantain for a Marathon (during training and race)?

Stryd does this for you but no mention any where I’ve seen of Garmin doing this too, I need this target otherwise Power would be just another number on my watch screen.

Thank you.

That said training and racing by power is kind of like training and racing by heart rate.

If you are running a perfectly flat course. Where power excels above pace or heart rate is on inclines/declines. Heart rate lags anywhere from 10-15 seconds where power is giving you at the moment readings. It will be long after you hit that hill peak before you know what your HR was pushed to. Running by HR will also be affected by temperature and diet. I've heard many say that the two are similar but there's actually a significant difference.
  • That’s all true, but my statement wasn’t meant to equate the 2 systems that closely. If you take my statement in whole my point was that each requires some time of collecting data running as you normally do until you have enough data to be actionable.
