Cold weather running - wrong distances?

Hi - I've been running in Denver recently, temps in teens/20s Farenheit in the early AM.

I've found that when I run out 2.5 miles according to the watch, then return on the same route, the total shown is around 4.7-4.8 miles. This has happened twice, and has never happened in warmer weather. Some wind, some hills, no precipitation.

Confounding factor, potentially: I use Stryd, and have Distance and Pace set to "Stryd - Always".

Anybody else with similar experiences?

Thanks!
  • So you're asking if the temperature impacts the Stryd? Just a WAG, but could the temperature impact your cadence or stride length?

I run most days in Maine where the temperatures range from below 0 to the 20's, and have not noticed any differences in distances.
  • Notne Run tomorrow with the watch on the outside of your clothing to see if that makes any difference. It does not happen often but some winter running gear can cause some negative effects on your GPS signal.

If that doesn't work, reach out to us through our Product Support channels (phone, email, or chat) so that we can work with you directly.

He doesn't use GPS distance, so that can not be the cause.
  • Good Point, I overlooked that small important fact. After re-reading again (out loud this time), it would be only a guessing gaming on why this is happening without more information. If we could look at a normal activity and a troubled activity, that could lead to more clues.
  • Thanks for replies, folks. I do wear the watch outside my three shirt/fleece layers, but the 4th layer (jacket), though not exactly covering the watch, is sort of bunched up against the watch … I could see where that might affect GPS, though I wouldn't think GPS would be active because of "Distance and Pace from Stryd = Always" (but I am using maps, which use GPS to some degree …?)

Garmin-Heath Administrator - the two runs in cold weather that gave a round trip distance less than the half-way distance were on December 10 and December 15 … any of the other runs would serve as a comparison. Please let me know if I need to give you access …

    Thanks very much!
