Feature request: Structured workouts with power as intensity target.

As I mention in the title, it’s time for Garmin to enable the Power as intensity target into the the structured workouts. Garmin has the most complete (almost) and easy tool for creating workouts but the lack of Power is something very frustrating for athletes who build their training plan on power metrics.

Edit: I mean Power for Running activities with the use of power foot pod or the HRM RUN/TRI or RD Pod.
  • I just went to Workouts, created a bike workout and set a power intensity target. What problem are you having? Do you have a power meter?
  • Sorry, I mean Power for running with the use of HRM Run or RD Pod that measure Power.
  • Well, it doesn't "measure" run. It calculates a number that is a best guess of what your power output might be. The problem is that they decided to do it as a CIQ app outside of the native functionality of the watch and as such they can't use it as a target. At least that was the answer I've seen before when this was brought up.

When the 'Running Power" feature was released there were a lot of very excited people, quickly followed by a lot of disappointment when people realized it had been done as a CIQ app and not a native feature. Now the limitations of it being an external CIQ app have really made it completely useless as a training function and so it has died a quiet death as a feature.

That exactly is the problem. More and more athletes use running power and should be supported natively. If I’m not mistaken, Suunto natively supports power in running workouts.
  • As the biggest player on the marked, Garmin is the last one to implement running power natively supported.

    It's not implemented yet :-(

It's been on my wishlist for I don't know how long...

However you can find DATARUN PREMIUM which is good, but still does not incorporate running power natively. But it works like that...
  • Browner40, I suppose that Garmin's running power has died a silent death. But Stryd running power with a dedicated foot pod certainly hasn't.

We are a lot of Stryd users with Garmin watches, and the lack of native power support is really annoying. The limitations can be somewhat worked around with Datarun Premium, but it is still just workarounds, not solutions.
  • Let’s do the request by mail to the beta team...
  • Agreed on all accounts. It is used by a lot of people and would allow for a much more uniform data tracking for people who do a mixture of trail/road running. I could also see it being very beneficial for pacing longer races similar to how bike power is currently used for triathlon pacing now. I was very excited to see it come out initially and was very disappointed when I tried to use it. Hopefully it becomes fully integrated and a native function in the future.
  • I think the issue is, that for some reason adding running power as an an ANT+ standard is just not happening right now (see e.g. https://the5krunner.com/2018/12/12/running-power-ant-standard-garmin-polar-suunto/). Probably due to the fact that there is simply no agreement on what constitutes running power and how it should be measured.

I personally use a Stryd and love it and most of my workouts are structured using power targets so a tighter integration would be very nice.
  • For a full integration of a stryd sensor, and to train on power based zones, buy a Coros... :
