Fenix 5 Plus Maps/Navigation Issues

I recently bought a Fenix 5 Plus and have been having a lot of issues with the maps and navigation. The majority of the time I try to use either, the watch ends up freezing and resetting. I have updated the firmware and all maps and have done soft and hard resets. I ended up returning the watch and getting another one and I am having the same problem, which may suggest user error. Any suggestions? Both devices arrived with zero battery with seemed odd to me (I though most electronic devices shipped with 30-70% battery). Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

  • You're going to need to be more specific if you want a meaningful answer. What maps and activities are you using? Where are you trying to navigate to? I've used the mapping and navigation on my 5 Plus extensively for navigation by car, foot (urban and hiking), backcontry canoeing, and cycling and I haven't run into any major problems that I haven't been able to overcome.

I am using the default maps and navigation apps (the ones that came with the device). My testing has typically consisted of performing the following steps:
    1) Go to "Navigation"
    2) Go to "Around Me"
    3) Wait until map loads
    4) Select a direction
    5) Select a random location (i.e., Wendy's)
    6) Select "Go"
    7) Wait while watch says "Calculating"
    8) While "Calculating", watch always resets
  • Just tried that on my 5+ running 6.0 and it worked here without a crash .
  • Are you outside with a GPS lock when doing this? I’ve previously only seen mapping crashes (but in the past on old firmware) when I’ve tried to select something to navigate to and the watch doesn’t have a GPS lock or the point being selected is an unfeasible to hike distance from where the watch is actually located (or where it thinks it is, if it hasn’t locked to GPS in a new location). I’ve not seen any issues on more recent firmware though.

Yes I am outside when I try this. I typically go to maps first to get a gps lock before going through my steps (although sometimes it freezes and resets on the maps part). I am using FW 6.0. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by which maps are activated, but I am using the North America maps. I am in New Jersey.
  • I'd suggest calling Garmin Support. They should be able to diagnose the issue.

I just got a Fenix 5S Plus and had the same problem. I managed a successful route 1 out of 10 attempts. The only thing that worked for me was loading up an open street map instead of Garmin's. Had no crashes ever since. I hope you have solved it by now, but if not, try this out and see if it works for you.

Where did you get the open street map and how to install it? I’m having the same issue on my Garmin Fenix 5x Plus watch and I’m starting to think it is a half-baked product.
