VO2 Max and weight

Until the past week my VO2 Max rating was excellent however over the past week it dropped substantially to fair.

I did notice that for some weird reason my weight on connect had doubled, so I have corrected it but so far my VO2 Max has not improved.

I would normally not be concerned but I currently have health issues.

So my question is can the weight setting have affected my VO2 Max and if so how can I get connect to sort itself out
  • VO2max is typically measured in mL/min/kg. That means it will be affected by weight. it will sort itself out after you have undertaken some activities that are sufficient for it to reset itself. While your VO2max sorts itself out, monitor your pace and heart rate for abrupt changes. Compare them with other activities. Monitor your resting heart rate first thing in the morning after you wake up. Should hold relatively constant. Any trend upwards over the course of two or three days could indicate health issues or possibly overtraining. Note also that VO2max is a long-term measure of fitness. It is not sensible to use it as a daily measure of health.

And of course, if you have concerns, go see a doctor.
  • I wouldn't put much value in the watch estimated vo2 max. I've trained extensively with mine and it estimated 57 yet when I did a lab controlled, oxygen monitored test my result was 62.
  • There's little point even trying to compare the estimate with the result from a lab test. The fact there was less than 10% difference is actually cause for celebration! That said, the estimates from Garmin can be used to track the progress of a training program and the concomitant change in fitness as long as the information is reliable. If however the data is all over the place and unreliable, then it's about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

My experience is that it works, provided the information supplied is good. I also know that the figure Garmin estimates for my VO2max is different to that I get when I test in the lab.
