Is it worth the extra money for the Fenix 5+ Sapphire version....what do you get?

Hi,

Re: Is it worth the extra money for the Sapphire version....what do you get?

What are the extra features?

Apart from the price & different bezel, what is the difference between:-

Garmin Fenix 5 Plus Sapphire Black Bezel GPS Black Rubber Strap

&

Garmin Fenix 5 Plus Silver Bezel Black Rubber Strap

???????

Thanks
  • The actual scratch resist glass that covers the entire display. If you are looking at a device you are going to use and abuse in an outdoor environment, the saphire glass will provide longevity.
  • Do you also get
    • Quickfit[SUP]Tm
    • [/SUP] 22 black silicone band & Carbon Grey DLC titanium band and black with black leather band versions?

  • Apologies - I do not understand the question
  • Maverick77777 I encourage you to have look at this site:

    https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/p/603201/pn/010-01987-01#

It shows all the different versions of the Garmin Fenix 5/5s/5X Plus lineup. Yes, there's a lot of different versions and colors, but the official Garmin site gives quite a good overview of what's available.
  • Hi,

Thanks for comments. I'd already looked at the link and now clarified with Garmin Chat. The Fenix 5+ & 5s, do not come with the Sapphire Screen and the 5+ Sapphire does not come with an extra strap. Only the versions pictured with a strap, come with an extra strap. The bezel color is the only difference.

    Cheers
  • In the case of the 5/5S the sapphire model also got you wifi, but in the plus series they all have wifi. I have had my Fenix 5 since it was introduced and the crystal and case look as new as the day I first opened the box, and I do use it in rough environments. I'm not sure the sapphire crystal is worth the extra $100, but it should be more durable.
  • I think that my comment has been accidentally deleted from this thread, so I will try again:

I have scratched the glass in at least two Fenix 3 watches without Sapphire. Recently, my F5X+ got a rough handling on the floor tiles at an indoor pool (with me on top). The bezel has abrasions, not just scratches. The sapphire glass is like new.

But sapphire is darker, most noticeable when light is coming at an angle.

I had the same dilema and there is no right answer. I would have paid the extra for the saphire glass...but the glass is darker and less clear than the non saphire; and I much prefered the look of the non saphire silver metal bezel. So in the end, although I could have paid more for the saphire version, I bought the non saphire for its style looks and for the clearer glass.

But... I rarely get scrathes on my watches, my previous FR235 was looking mint after 12 months with plastic screen. Also, if I do get a scratch I can live with as I see it as character, I am no longer OCD about it looking mint

  • I ordered an F5+ a few days ago and I ordered the sapphire, not because I want the more durable crystal but because I wanted the black bezel. My current F5 is slate gray which I really like, but unless I pay for the DLC coating, which costs a bundle more, I'm not getting that. Also, one vendor had the non-sapphire but charged nearly $50 sales tax, and another vendor had the black with sapphire but didn't charge sales tax, so for me, the sapphire only costs $50 more ;-)

I'll make a decision about whether or not I actually like the sapphire soon, since the new toy arrives today!
  • That's a good choice, and the one I have, you will notice that the sapphire screen has a slightly bluer tint to it (if you see it next to the base model), apart from that smudges come off easily and visibility seems decent in all lighting conditions. The durability of this non-DLC bezel is excellent also, as I once accidentally brushed it quite forcefully against a steel handrail (I'm usually very careful), the steel of the handrail marked the edge of the watch grey, but a quick wipe with my shirt made things like new again with no damage at all even under a magnifying glass.
