Bug: Backlight timeout changes to 4 seconds if Fenix 5x+ is synced w/ Garmin express

Hello,

Essential information first:

Device: Fenix 5x+ Ti DLC
Software version: 5.10
GPS version: 2.30
Garmin Express on OSX 10.13.6 High Sierra

Problem description: Whenever I set the backlight timeout on the device by going to Settings >> System >> Backlight >> Timeout to any value (including "No Timeout"), it changes back to 4-second timeout everytime I sync with Garmin Express (on OSX) or use Android File Transfer.

This does not happen when I sync with Garmin Connect on Andriod.

Is anyone else experiencing this?
  • Garmin often screw up in the Sync settings.

I think it is 2-4 different departments for watch vs sync vs mobile sync - and non of them seem to use "Unit testing" before shipping code. That would have caught such an error.

They are a messy bunch of developers. Messy and unstructured developers are identified by their ability to introduce the same types of errors again and again - or by fixing one thing and breaking 2 other. Happens again and again and again and again on Garmin Wearable Products.

Write to the Garmin beta department - they occasionally answer mails (I think 1:100)

Thanks Kaz911. I am going to email Garmin's beta department once I find their contact information. I was curious to see if others are experiencing the same bug.

I agree that Garmin is pretty messy with software, but I am heavily invested in the Garmin ecosystem (Edge, inReach, Fenix, etc) and I like the integration which no other companies on the market seems to offer. I also think they have refined things a little compared to previous generations of the Fenix series, but there is certainly loads of room for improvement, especially with respect to software.

Update: Garmin's beta team basically said that they wouldn't look into it since I am NOT using the beta software. I submitted a regular support ticket anyway.

I see that you are using a publicly released software version for your device. This email inbox is intended to provide feedback on beta software. I will recommend that you reach out to our Product Support team with your issue as they can provide more thorough and consistent assistance with the problem you are encountering. I will provide a link to contact them: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?productID=603229&tab=topics
The bottom of this web page has three tabs to chat, call, or email.

    Thanks for reaching out!

I'm on the same versions as you, but sync using a Windows 10 PC. My backlight settings remain in tact, so maybe this is a limited issue with OSX?

I have reported to Garmin and awaiting a fix, but it this point it is not a very annoying bug.
