Can the distance accuracy problems on twisty wooded trails be fixed?

For those who know of the issue I’m talking about, and understand gps watch software, I have a simple question...

Can, and more importantly, do you think Garmin will, fix it? It definitely seems to be software related as the tracks are pretty decent looking, which makes me think it can be fixed with firmware.

It’s a dream watch if it didn’t have this problem. But if the problem isn’t fixed or can’t be fixed, the watch is useless to me as a trail runner.

  • I've had a chance to compare results of quite a few more devices. The Fenix is always behind in distance (wooded trails on MTB). Just by reseaching more into this problem, you will find that the distance issue isn't just a problem with the latest Fenix version. It been a problem with pretty much most Fenix versions. Which leads me to believe this is a Hardware/design issue and probably will not be fixed with any software updates. I'll keep my fingers crossed and send in my info to the support team.

I do really like the watch, but wish I would have done a little more research before buying. I made the mistake of assuming this watch would be dialed in on the 'basics'. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Luckily, for my training, tracking hours on the bike is more important then tracking overall mileage. It's still really disappointing, though.

  • I want accurate distance, speed, pace when I go walking, hiking, jogging. The garmin fenix 5x plus is off, when compared to phone and vehicle GPS (used while walking to test)

I don't have cash for Stryd pod. But I do have 100 or less to spend on another pod that tracks those things very good.

What's another pod I can buy that you guys have tested?

Just get the Garmin Footpod, works great. The old one for the shoe.
  • To the original question: No, it looks like this problem can not be fixed. If distance accuracy is important to you, a Fenix watch is not a good choice.
  • I am aware this is a 3 year old thread, I must say the problem is very much still valid. The watch is very expensive and the accuracy on distances has not been resolved, far from it. And, yes people are still very much accepting they bought an expensive watch that turned out to be useless in exactly the function that it was supposed to be frontrunner, gps accuracy. Its rubbish, but Garmin helpdesk say they are happy with 10% deviation. Nothing to see here.

  • Thats right, for anyone using it on trail or forest runs its absolutely rubbish. As valid 3 years ago as today. I just wished someone had told me.
