Transferring fenix 5 topo maps to Basecamp

I wanted to create a new course using Basecamp, but didn't like the global map that Basecamp comes with. I then connected my fenix and waited as Basecamp loaded the topo maps from the watch to the PC. Seeing that it was done, I unplugged the watch from the computer only to see the maps disappear off of Basecamp.

Is there no way to transfer the maps to Basecamp without the watch being plugged in?
  • Copy the respective map file (or just the whole contents of the /Garmin folder on the watch) on to a USB stick/card connected to the PC and point Basecamp to that location to find maps. I keep an SD card permanently in the SD slot on my laptop for exactly this purpose.

So I found the map on my fenix in the /Garmin folder, gmapprom.img, and transferred it to a flash drive. I then opened Basecamp and although Basecamp lists the flash drive as a device, I do not see the map. All I see is a folder that says User Data.

Now this is the 100k US/Canada TopoActive map that I downloaded to the watch. Perhaps only purchased maps can be transferred around? Trying to figure this out. :(
  • Is there another non .img file with the same name (gmapprom.xxx). Just wondering if that’s the missing bit required. As I mentioned, copying the whole /Garmin folder worked for me.
  • All maps will but some need a flag setting for BaseCamp to see them. Use JaVaWa's Device Manager program to see the maps on the stick and set the map to be visible in BaseCamp.

I was able to just copy the entire Garmin directory to my flash drive and the maps popped up perfectly. Thanks for all your help!
  • If the map wasn't in a folder named Garmin, which is what you were asked to do, it won't work. You don't though need the complete Garmin folder. Anyway if it's working and you're happy that's great.
