Missing GPS data in recorded workout

For the second time I'm getting a partially corrupted track where some of GPS data is seemingly missing. I did my usual morning run in a park where I run to the park, do there a few loop and then return back home. In the recorded track I'm seeing path to the park, half of the first loop and then the track jumps to the finish skipping about 7km of my run. The strange thing is that if I look on the track in Garmin connect (app or website) the lap marking (i.e. start of each km) is shown correctly! So the watch did had a correct GPS signal. As I wrote I'm seeing the problem for the second time, I had another long run a few weeks ago where the recorded track seemingly skipped a few kms but the lap marks and the overall distance was shown correctly. I have never seen anything like this with my previous watch (Fenix 3).

Any ideas what causes this and how to fix it? ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1421745.png
  • Please post a link to activity and perhaps upload the FIT file too. Perhaps there is a minor record fault that is causing the GC track rendering to go wild.

Today's track with GPS data seemingly missing after 3km: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3142050828
Another track with the same problem a few weeks ago, GPS data is missing between 21th and 24km but the km splits are shown correctly: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3071336162

    FIT files attached.
  • I am not an expert. At 7:20:46 you pressed the Stop button? And then 50 seconds later you pressed that start button?

I only press stop at the end of an activity. I have done thousands.

Yeah, probably I did. I often pause activities when waiting for green on traffic lights
  • You can install a beta (5.53) or wait for an update. 5.10.0.0 is probably the worst. I had a lot of different jumps 1-5 km. Only the distance was and is ok.

for the oldest file, GPS data vanishes after a Manual STOP and mysteriously reappears during the remaining workout
did you use a course file from Garmin Training Center ?

No, I didn't know what Garmin Training Center is until I googled a few minutes ago. But no, I didn't use any pre-made courses (with this app or another) for these two activities.

are you using non Garmin maps ?

Yes, I have a few OSM based maps. They are enabled but I didn't use navigation data screen during these activities. I've run these two routes so many times that I could almost run them blindfolded :)

did you use music during the activity ?

Nope, I one of those runners who prefers silence.

do you run with the watch connected to the smartphone ?

Maybe, I mean I usually do have my smartphone with me just in case and bluetooth is always on but I have no idea if the watch was actually connected or not. The connections does break from time to time.

did you notice a change in GPS icon like color or a buzzing watch at the time ?

I don't remember anything out of order during these runs. I check my watch pretty often during runs as almost all my workouts are either pace or HR based so I think I would have noticed anything unusual displayed on the watch.

would recommend you use 1 second recording
contact Garmin support and tell them about this strange GPS mishap
also a reset to default could do wonders :o

    happy running

Thanks, I guess I'll try 1 second recording. I'm a bit reluctant to do the reset - it is such a hassle to restore all my carefully crafted data screens and the problem doesn't happen that often, at least not yet.

Yeah, I thought about trying this but on the first glance there are seemingly no fixes in the changelog which are somehow relevant to the problem.

Possible, but after the upgrade the track is a bit better, and that I'm not afraid of digging into electronics. I'm not saying that everything is all right ...
