Garmin HRM-Run connection and disconnection

Hey ,

Is HRM-Run disconnecting automatically after activity or do I need to manually switch it off to make sure it is not trying to connect all the time and drain battery ? It is a red rubber version of strap.

I've read 1 or 2 posts about it but there are various opinions and not very specific.

thanks

  • Are you concerned about the battery of the HRM-Run or your watch?
The strap goes to low-power sleep mode automatically some time after you take it off.
And on the watch you do not need to disconnect it manually, either. The watch does not keep connection to external ANT+ sensors when not in activity mode.
  • Well, it appears to keep some kind of connection after an activity ends. Or at least some kind of knowledge that I am still wearing the HRM strap.

I have several times experienced that after I ended an activity without removing the HRM strap, the HR from the OHR would not show on my watch face. If I then remove the HRM strap, HR will reappear on my watch face.
  • thanks ,

yeah , I am concerned about both batteries. I will test it with connection on and off and how it will affect battery on my particular apac 5 plus. Thx Guys.
  • The heart rate straps wake up when they detect your heart, and go to sleep after a while once you've taken it off. I use the HRM-Tri, and the HRM-Swim, and they connect/disconnect as expected. Don't worry if you look in the menu and it says "Searching", the BT/Ant runs in a low power mode (which is really really really low power), it doesn't ramp to high power unless it detects it is in use.

    thanks Crutlefish
  • After few weeks of testing I can confirm that leaving hrm-run all the time on searching mode when not using, will drain your watch battery by 13 to 18 % more in 7 days.
  • I have noticed this too. It is better if you switch off the connection from the watch.
  • In the case of the Scosche, I just turn it off when I'm done with it. Do the chest straps lack off switches?

forgot to mention that im recently using it for :

    - nonstop all activity tracking, sleep and stress, temp, notifications - taking it off for shower
    - 2 times by 1hour in 7 days - Bodypump with chest strap
    - 2 times in 7 days - 5K run with full GPS on and chest strap + Bluetooth music on
    - 1 Hike without chest strap - around 10 - 12 km - full GPS on - around 3 hours in use
    - Random HRV measurings
    - watch face fenix - animated
    - Backlight - 20% , keys on after sunset

  • We had to exchange one of our HRM4s recently for sputtering and then dying. One of them seems to be going strong, then the other one died within a month. Replaced the battery once, seemed to pair up fine, then the next day it just died.

For $100 I'd expect these to work at least as well as my old Polar strap, which was virtually indestructible for years. Between that and the other glitches my wife has been having with her 5S+, just really frustrating.
