Round trip with turn-by-turn on map routing always wanted to go home

Today I tried to use my Fenix 5 Plus for navigating a motorcycle trip. I had created a course in BaseCamp that starts at my front door and ends there and with the magic of shaping points, I got a course.

When starting navigation (motorcycle, on map mode) with that course, it showed up fine on the map first (whole course drawn with a pink line), however, when starting to drive, the watch went into "Calculating..." for a while and then tried to navigate back home (pink line to the "end point") instead of following the course. Also, the turn-by-turn instruction only showed my direction (e.g. "Blahblahstreet SW") and a distance of "0 m". No arrow or other instruction. The map I used was OpenTopoMap which is said to have routing capabilites.

So what was happening here?
  • Your fenix got confused, devices can do with round trips. The solution is to move the end point further away from the start point and ensure when you start navigating you're closer to the start than the end point.
  • On top of that, turn-by-turn navigation is buggy in the latest firmware version(s?). The "0m" message appears in any road navigation I do, and the arrows are strange too. In earlier firmware versions I got a distance countdown when approaching the next turn, and arrows were correctly indicated on the map.

I recalculated a "Do course in reverse" while being about 1/4th from the "start" (the actual end, but with the course reversed, it was the start) and away from the way back. It first showed up fine on the map view but as soon as I moved it went into "Calculating..." and then wanted to send me directly to the start/end. It feels like it's a limitation of the "On Map"-mode which should dynamically recalculate the route, but seems to ignore any shaping points.
  • No experience with the motorcycle mode but to me it seems strange that the watch is recalculating when in course mode. When i cycle and use a course, there is no calculating. It shows the route i uploaded but it can however show that i'm off track. Then f.e. ETA changes.
Recalculating happens when i design a route (f.e. 100 km) or use 'navigate to destination' if i'm taken a wrong turn (software version 5.1). Maybe a bug, like the 0m message?

I've set the course mode to "on map" which is supposed to recalculate a way to get you back on track instead of just showing you're "off track". Maybe that mode doesn't play well with round trips. I will try with "Follow Course" mode next time.

Most of my bike rides are round trips - I tend to plot them in Garmin Connect and sync them over.

I have the same issue as you have when using "Use Map", however, "Follow Course" works great. It does mostly turn-by-turn as (sometimes corners are not sharp enough) but most of the time that doesn't matter. Following the source on the map screen is great.

I plan on experimenting some more with "Use Map" and will report back if I figure out anything interesting.

This problem still shows up in version 13.4.

  • I wouldn't know. I am still at 8.01, which was released a few months ago.

In this version, the problem is solved.

Btw., do you have to drive faster than 90 mph in your Delorean to get those firmware versions.
