going from F5 - F5 plus

I currently have a Fenix 5 Sapphire but might be able to get my hands on the plus model instead. I just wanted anyone's opinion on reasons to NOT go for it. I can see that the battery takes a slight dip from 2 weeks to 10 days in watch mode, but that is still great and hoping it wouldn't be too noticeable if I'm not using music.

Looks-wise, the bezel appears a bit thinner, otherwise both super similar.

For me, the main advantage would be the mapping, but would love to hear what you think!

Thanks,
  • Hi chatlow! I previously owned a FR235 and now have a fenix 5+ with Beta 5.53 loaded onto it. I am very happy with it. I currently get about 90% of the overall battery life that is stated on the Garmin website. During activities, I get the advertised battery life using GPS+GALILEO whether I use the wrist OHM or my HRM-Tri and also while using ANT+ cadence and speed. Where I do see a battery life issue is after I complete an activity. My fenix seems to go through an hour or two of high battery drain (about 2% per hour). It then settles down to normal smartwatch usage. (This may be why I am only seeing about 90% of the expected overall battery life.) So, based upon my experience, I think the watch will last through your IM and have plenty to spare. I have my first IM coming up and I am not worried at all about the watch lasting through it. Of course, that is the last thing we should be worried about during a race, right?!? Regarding the charge time, it takes my fenix about 2-1/2 hours to go from 20% to 100% when connected to my computer. Hope this helps! Good luck with your decision!

Great, thanks! I have gone for the F5 plus! Sounds like there could be an issue with the battery indicator but, none the less, it should be fine lasting a full IM distance. Let's hope that I am able to as well :-/

How do you all think when Garmin will realese the new Fenix line model?
  • 2020...

Enough was built into the 5+ to delay the next release.
  • Not so sure about that. I think they will release fenix6 at ces.
The fenix 6 was listed together with at that time the unreleased instinct for problems related to ble 5 and ant+ a couple of months ago.

When will CES technology presentations be planned?
And if the event introduces a new model, will it be available until the spring?
  • 2019 International CES will begin on Tuesday, 8 January and ends on Saturday, 12 January ("ces 2019" @ google)

Garmin has a history of presenting new fenix devices the day before ces or at the first day.
First series at some customer march-april.
Series available in larger quantity April-May. Serious bugs often exist.
Q3 - The major bugs are squashed and full supply chain.
Q4 - Rumor start about a next generation that will be superior to the current one...

The fenix+ series didn't follow that plan, but could be due to it was 3-4 months delayed due to technical difficulties.
