No Live Segments today

Hi guys,

I did the trail run along the same course on 11. Oct and then today on 20. Oct.

While Live Segments (Strava) functionality did work on my Fenix 5 Plus on the first run (heads up messages on approaching segment, how am I doing during the segment)
no Live Segments were presented to me today.

Will you please help me to troubleshoot the situation?

Here is what I know was the same on both runs:
- Version of firmware 5.10
- Trail Run as an activity
- Decent (comparable) GPS coverage along the course
- Trail Run Settings / Segment Alerts: On

Here is what I know was different on those runs:
- Training / Strava Live Segments / Auto Effort: Off on the second run (On on first one)
- Training / Strava Live Segments / [specific segment] / Race Times: my PR (my friend's PR on first run)
- I switched to a different topo map between runs
- Considerably worse mobile internet connection (I simply run out of my prepaid data volume for fast download rate)

Now, why did I turned off Auto Effort and changed Race Times settings?
Because I wanted to race against my own PRs instead of firend's PR/CR and I found an advice on this forum that this is the way to go.
I mentioned internet connection just for the case Live Segments somehow require Connect Mobile and hence good internet connection.
But I think this is not the case or is it?

So, any clues, why I was deprived the luxury of Live Segments today?

Thanks.

  • Just wondering, you say you used a different topo map for the 2nd run, could it be that map doesn't have whatever feature that allows the Segments? Perhaps routing, or something? I'd say go back to the original map and see if that produces the results you're after, at least you'd know it "wasn't" the map..
  • Yesterday I transfered some Strava segments to the F5+ and went for a long trail run. I confirm that they don’t work. They are into the segment list but I had no notification of approaching, timing etc. I don’t think that maps are the reason of this malfunction as segments are somehow as courses. You don’t have to open a map to get them
work. Segments are not routes. I’m on 5.53b.
  • I’ve also responded in the 5.53 beta thread, but this doesn’t seem to be an issue for everyone. Strava segments working just fine on my 5+ during runs and bike rides; on 5.53 beta too (but also fine on 5.10 and 5.52). It’s not obvious what’s causing this issue for some of you; especially when you can see the segments have physically been transferred to your 5+’s memory. I also have maps installed and a map data page on my run and bike apps, so I don’t think that’s the issue.

I’m sure you all have, but just a quick thing to confirm that you are all on the right level of Strava paid membership that includes Live Segments enabled on your Garmin device; without that it won’t work (but also shouldn’t transfer across to the watch in the first place anyway)
  • Hi Guys,

Thanks for your comments. Now it is becoming clear (but let's say not 100% certain) that Strava Segments are suppressed when we are doing workout or navigating. The evidence in favour of this explanation has piled up enough for me:

I did the sync through GCM and the segments transfered to the F5+ correctly. They appear in the Strava Segments list. I remember that this featured was ok some weeks ago. The activity I used yesterday, had 8 data screens ands I had the course navigation enabled as I was on an unfamiliar path. Maybe segments are not working properly when navigation is enabled. I don’t know, I have to do some tests.

And now I have also my own experience.
Today I did lactate threshold test, which is a actually a workout and a segment on the route didn't kick in.
Then after the test I continue running and another segment did kick in.

In my opening post I listed things that have changed since live segments worked for me, but now that we know what is the true reason, nothing in that list is relevant.

Pity that this behaviour is not documented in user manual :(

For me this is second example of a feature, which is suppressed by another feature.
    1. ClimbPro screens are suppressed when you have Auto Climb ON - not documented
    2. Strava Live Segment are suppressed when you are doing workout or navigation - not documented

Unnecessary source of user frustration - don't you think, Garmin?
  • I struggled to insert these links to my previous post, so here they are:

"Strava live segments while following" course and "General navigation"

Live segments notifications when navigating a course
  • Anything new on this?

Discovered that my Live Segments didn't work when navigation yesterday.. on f6x

  • Is this because Strava has paywalled segments now?

  • I dont think. Live Segments (strava version) never worked for me, because I have never been a subbscriber.

Garmin live segments worked on the other hand.

So it is not new that you have to pay to have Stravaa Live segments.

  • Yesterday there was an issue downloading the official maps via Garmin Express. I wonder if it had to do with that. Non the download problem has been fixed.
