Device not charging

Since yesterday my Fenix 5X Plus won't charge. I've tried everything I can think of: soft reset, hard reset, cleaning the charging contacts, multiple charging cables, different USB ports on the same computer, multiple computers, different wall chargers... There's no way to make the battery percentage go up, even though the watch changes to the charging interface when plugged. When connected to either a USB port or a wall charger the "Charge status" on the test mode changes from "Off" to "Constl", but I don't really know what that means.

Anyone has any idea how to resolve the issue, other than sending the watch back to Garmin?
  • The above tip by Dan1Clements to focus on the connector clean up on the watch completely fixed the issue with my watch not charging anywhere. I have used a metalic kitchen sponge and gently scrubbed the copper connector on the watch after which the charging functioned perfectly again. My watch is just a bit over a year old and the connector did not look dirty at all, so I was also surprised that this was the problem. Thank you for the tip!
  • Surprisingly this worked for me too on a fenix 5x (not plus), I was at a loss after it had abruptly stopped working thanks Dan1Clements . I have recently been in Vietnam and Portugal both very humid places which would make sense given the explanation. Annoying that this is an issue but glad in my case it seems to have been fixed with the above. Cheers
  • My Fenix 5 has become increasingly difficult to charge. This morning, it refused entirely. This thread has been invaluable: I just used a pair of scissors to scrape the metal contacts both on the watch and the charging cable, and it started working again.

It may be relevant that I moved to Hong Kong from the UK a month ago, and it is incredibly humid here.

Thanks to those who contributed to this thread earlier.
  • Scratching the connectors is not the best solution. The surfaces normally have a coating on that gets damaged by scratching them.

Try DeoxIT D5 first - it is a special contact cleaner. It works magic. It has kept my AirPod’s alive for a long time despite being used for hard running often.

I put it on my 5x+ and 5x before - and it helps a lot.

And if you have scratched your connectors DeoxIT D5 adds some coating to it again. So no matter what D5.... :)

(I’m NOT affiliated with them - but it is standard accessory for many EE’s)

Sorry, This post was a while ago but mine is the same, chages from PC but not wall adapter. Did you have the repair done and if so what was the fault? Thanks.

  • Along with cleaning the connectors, try this.

With the watch not connected, hold three buttons down (light, down and start buttons) for 15-20 seconds and try charging again.

I just finished chatting with Erica from Garmin Support Centre. The chat took less than 10 minutes and resulted in them sending me a refurbished watch, and I'll send in the defective one when I receive the new one. So quick and easy...

  • Mine wouldn't charge at ALL. I did your trick thinking it wouldn't work as there was no power left but it worked. Thank you!

  • Thanks for the great tip, CHARGING now and going well
