I'd buy JayBirds right now if I could get drop-free (or near drop-free) outdoor running.
  • How do you find the X3’s generally? Reviews are hit and miss. Thanks

I like them a lot. Very good sound when EQ is changed in Jaybird app. The battery life could be better...

CBSalad I ran outside in open terrain with no dropouts.
  • The Jaybird X3 allows you to flip the left/right channel so you can put the BT antenna on the left side, same as your watch.

I've never had any drop outs in the "sport" mode with the antenna on the left.

I just hate that they took away the standard USB charger and have a charging dock. Ugh, one more thing I have to remember.

Edit: there was a pretty extensive thread about headphones when the 5+ first went on the market

  • I’ll add a couple things. The jaybirds tend to fail from sweat if you run daily. I find they last 3-4 months for me. I bought the X3 and same thing, but bought an extended warranty.

They also drop out occasionally with my iPhone strapped to my waist while running, but it was tolerable.

Then I recently got the Jabra 65Ts (non athletic version as nearly identical specs to the atheltic version but cheaper) and almost no dropouts with my iPhone and I’ve been thrilled with them. I believe Jabra has a two year sweat warranty.

Then I got my Fenix 5+ and on my left wrist they drop out quite frequently (I also tried the jabird X3 and they did to), on my right it’s fine - but I wear on my left day to day and when running.

I’m really disappointed in Garmin here as it was a key added feature vs the prior version, and they had the opportunity to learn from the forerunner music implementation. Furthermore, Apple can make it work in a high end watch that costs much less.

If garmin has tuned down the broadcast strength to conserve battery, I would gladly make the trade off of inferior battery life when plays - so I actually could get some utility out of this feature.

Ill try again whenever I have a short workout given some say it’s improved with the new firmware, but this issue is a nagging regret for me on the watch.

On the plus side, GPS accuracy seems pretty good recently as long as I’m not running through areas with high buildings.
  • I’d really appreciate it if garmin could comment if weaker than ideal signals from the watch to headphones could be corrected with a firmware update, or is any improvement unlikely as it’s a hardware limitation.

I use AftershoKZ Air BT earphones with my Fenix 5+ and the stream is not getting interrupted even when 3 meters away from the watch..

On the downside , I have to charge the battery every 2 days or so (WiFi, BT are always on as well as the customized WatchFace and GPS+Glonass) ..
  • crutlefish , bpl1972 - is that indoor or outdoor running with no drops? What kind of terrain?

I don't run inside! I ran an outdoor half marathon yesterday, listening to Spotify, heart rate strap, and in the 1hr50m, not a single drop out or hiccup. Left wrist.

If anything the headphones and watch faffed about connecting to each other before I started, but once connected there was no issue at all.

That's disappointing to me. I'm using the Bose SoundSports and HRM too and I get pretty frequent drops. Maybe Garmin just hates me.

What kind of terrain? Suburbs? Trail?

I agree. I would easily trade battery for drop-free BT connections. Maybe a "boost bluetooth" menu option.
  • I borrowed my wife’s Powerbeats 2 today and they work flawlessly with the watch on either wrist, but I’m not a fan of the headphones. I tried my Jabra 65T that I really like with the new firmware and it drops 2-3 times a minute if the watch is on my left side - so no luck with the new firmware. It’s too bad as the new jabra are really great. I guess I’ll be taking my nano on my marathon in 2 weeks as I don’t like running with a plus size phone during a race, and I’m not comfortable with a watch the size of the 5S+ for 3 hours on my right wrist. Bit of a letdown as I was excited about the watch replacing my phone or nano for key runs.
