GPS Software update 2.30

GPS Software update 2.30 just showed on my Garmin Express this morning with description: 'GNSS Software Release' ??... the last beta GPS was 2.24 so it is an update

I am 'out of town' and didn't take the USB cable, so can't update, maybe it will upload OTA during the night.. any one has it in the watch? any changes?
  • I was informed yesterday that this had been released specifically to address OWS GPS accuracy. I have not tried it out yet to see if it helps, I'll install it as soon as it shows up on my express and hopefully get an OWS in later this week to see how it does. My previous experience on sunday with GPS 2.24 was less than good, so hopefully this is a big improvement.
  • I just got it OTA but i can't try it out because of my achilles tendon still hurts :(

A colleague of mine came to me and told he received the GPS version 2.30 OTA yesterday evening.
I said strange i didn't see any update on my watch and no announcement.
Now almost a day later still no update.

However his watch shows 2.30 and the existence of this topic means others have it.

Does anyone know how to manually download / add it? Cant find any Garmin links or beta's with the GPS 2.30 inlcuded.
Current on 2.24 but still the pace during running is far from perfect (read:unusable).

I am fine with the total distance running, biking and OWS but it's clear Garmin uses other routines to calculate these.

After using the method Garmin-Heath described i was able to update the GPS to V2.30
During the synchronisation process with Garmin Express the program however told me my watch was up to date.
But after disconnecting i could do the GPS update right now or during the night.
Will start testing running tomorrow and OWS this weekend.
(can't find any information from Garmin on the changes between the 2.24 and 2.30 however)

Last time I plugged in to Connect I got an unwanted system update.

Is it possible to plug in and only update GPS but not the system files? 4.2 didn't work for me, still on 3.1 since it's solid for everything I need. 2.24 OWS could be better though.

You can update the GPS but not the system files if you got the right GPS file.
The GPS 2.24 is in the beta system firmware 4.74 (and older) and worked with the current system 4.20.
Follow the beta install instructions and only place the GPS file in the right directory.
The only method to get GPS V2.30 (for the moment) to connect with Garmin express.
If a new beta is released i think the GPS 2.30 will be included in that package.

I did a run this evening and the GPS 2.30 doesn't address the unusable pace the watch shows and registers.

During my constant speed run the pace times kept going from 4:00-5:50min/km.
The km laps are registered on the right places (with the right times)
For example tonight the 9-10km lap time was 4.41minute (9km marker OK, 10km marker OK, time OK)
But if i look at the pace graph it shows i ran 4.41 for 2 second and rest is "much" lower (4:50-5:00) my estimate average of the total would be 4:55.
That means an average pace Error +/-15 seconds/km on what is shown/registered during the run and the real 1km lap data.
  • I saw on my 5S Plus yesterday that there was a GPS update, and went thru the process on my watch to install it. When I later connected with Garmin Express, it said that the update was available to install. It went thru the process again, but it hung up at the end, and eventually I had to close Garmin Express even though it said it could cause problems. At this point, the watch says that the GPS version installed is 2.30.

Hi BWonder, yes, I have popped 2.24 from the later Beta into mine but kept 3.1 system and it works well.
I'm watching the beta thread to monitor issues that pop up before taking the plunge for now since I'm sick of rolling back! I've got auto updates on my watch turned off for now.
I'll hang on until 2.3 is posted or beta updated.
