Querstions about pacing?

With me being in the Navy, out to sea where I have no gps signal, is it reliable to get a foot pod and it tell me my pace while I'm running or no ? Do I still need gps signal no matter what ?
  • When running in places with no GPS signal the watch uses the built-in accelerometer to estimate pace. But if you want better accuracy then get a footpod. And remember to turn GPS off on the watch for activities without GPS signal, so that the watch is not confused by occasional GPS reception.

If I do have GPS signal and have a foot pod , do I still keep GPS on right? What foot pods are good with the 5x plus ?

Right, unless you don't care about the GPS track, or want to save battery.

Any ANT+ footpod should do, either the original garmin sdm4 (unjastifiably expensive) or one of the many clones, like for example the adidas micoach speedcell, or geonaute. Some users report that the stryd footpod is the most accurate, but it's quite expensive.
