Hrm strap

Hello,
i am interested in buying the hrm tri because of triathlon but my training activities for open water is on the swimming pool.i read that i cant use it because of the non chlorine resistance.i know i can buy the the hrm swim but both straps is too much expensive. Is there any solution?or have you to suggest me another strap for triathlon activities including the swimming pool??
  • The HRM-Tri is not suitable for pool swimming for two reasons. The one you mentioned - chlorine will degrade the strap when used frequently. And the other is that the HRM-Tri strap does not stick to your body and will slip down during swimming if not worn under a tri suit or wetsuit.

The HRM-Swim on the other hand can be used in both pool and open waters, but is not as comfortable for anything else than swimming, as it is wider, less breathable and less elastic than a normal HRM strap. But technically, you can use the HRM-Swim during all legs of a triathlon, although you won't have running dynamics during the run leg.

  • The HRM SWIM will not give me info about cycling, right?is there any hrm strap suggestion except garmin?
  • The HRM-Swim will work as a normal HR strap for all types of activities, including cycling.

  • I didn't know that i can use the hrm swim while i am cycling or i ai am running(only for hr)..but whats the difference between hrm tri and swim?
  • There are two major differences between HRM-Tri and HRM-Swim. The most notable is the strap material. The HRM-Swim has a wider, less elastic and more sticky strap, which makes it more suitable for pool swimming, because a normal strap would slip down due to water drag. The other difference is that HRM-Tri provides running dynamics in addition to heart rate for running activities.

But in running the hrm will show me my hr,right?
  • Yes. Both straps will show heart rate for any type of activity.
  • I have both the HRM-Tri and the HRM-Swim. You would not want to use the HRM-Swim for anything but pool swimming. To the point where I bought the HRM-Swim and ended up also buying the HRM-Tri. The material on the swim is excellent for not slipping in the pool, but I'd not want to go running or cycling with it. You always know when you are wearing it. On the other hand, the HRM-Tri is comfortable enough that I forget I'm wearing it - even after 7 hours in the saddle. Here are some photos to see the difference. You can see the super tacky backing on the blue HRM-Swim.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1401129.jpg
  • I just got the HRM-Swim in the last 3 weeks. it was on sale on Amazon. I will be looking to get the TRI version sometime next spring, hopefully it goes on sale too. Currently when I run and bike I use my existing Wahoo TICKR. However I want to get the Run Dynamics in the near future.

The HRM-Swim tracks your HRM as you swim and stores it on the belt and transfers the results when you're done. The instantaneous HR is available, but only when you have the belt and watch out of the water. So if you stop at the end of a lap and standup you can see it. When you are submerged the ANT+ cannot penetrate the water.

In terms of comfort, I find the belt very comfortable to wear in the water, and as other have said the belt sticks to you. I understand if you were to use the TRI belt in the swimming pool, you may have an issue with slippage, as well the chlorine will destroy the material. Outside of the water it is noticeable. I wear it very snug to avoid slipped, especially during wall push offs. In fact I actually use the smallest belt extender that comes. Wearing it during a run or bike I think would feel very restrictive / uncomforable.

Lastly, here are a few things I've learned, which don't affect how I use it. But good to know.
    1. Swim HR is not shown in Strava when your workout is uploaded.
    2. Swimming HR does not count towards Intensity Minutes, but Training Effect does update.
  • When submerged if you hold your watch right up against your HRM-Tri or HRM-Swim it will give you instantaneous HR and sync the last lap stats.
