Step Count problem

I noticed that my Fenix 5 plus (4.20) counts steps while I am riding. I did a 7 hour long ride and had the watch on a handlebar mount. So I surely did not do 10k steps, and in the afternoon, when finished with the ride, I was at 10k out of 11k daily goal.

This has happened multiple times.

  • The bumps and turning the handle while the Fenix (or any Garmin) will trigger steps, I think your best best would be to turn off activity tracking when going on a long ride. Surprisingly a couple of weeks ago I did a 100k ride and I maybe got 1000 steps while the watch was on my wrist and that was likely from walking around at the rest stops.

I do wish you could set it to no steps for certain activities. I know Garmin won't do this by default becasue other people will want the steps for cycling, the all or nothing approach is a lose/lose situation for Garmin. Having the ability to automatically turn off step counting for certain activities would definitly be welcomed.
  • I would have thought that by default step count would be off for a ride... why on earth would you want steps there? Or choose whether u have it handlebar - so turn off activity tracking, or have it on your wrist when riding and count steps at stops (e.g. when speed is less than 3-4 km/h)... otherwise I don't think it makes sense. Or count steps only when manually paused...

I can't think of any other logic where step count would be turned on during a ride activity...
