Bluetooth pairing issues with Android phone (Sony Xperia X Compact)

Hey,

I've got a new Fenix 5X Plus a week ago and as the very first step tried to pair with my smartphone (Sony Xperia X Compact - runs on Android 8.0.0) and found that pairing process doesn't work at all. After initiating pairing via Settings/Pair Phone on watches and Garmin Devices/Add Device in Garmin Connect I get to see error message "Pairing failed" on both my phone and on the watch. During pairing process I can see fenix 5X Plus in the list of available bluetooth devices on my phone and interestingly enough I see the error message to appear on the phone and on the watch at exactly same time so some exchange between devices seems to happening. During pairing process there is no prompt to enter PIN on the phone. Likewise no code is shown on the watch. It just straight goes to the error message on both devices.

What I have tried to fix the problem?
* Restart my phone / turn on&off bluetooth a few times - does not help
* Reset network settings on my phone - does not help
* Connect the watch to computer via USB and update firmware to the latest stable version 4.20 - firmware has been updated, it doesn't help
* Reset the watch via Settings/System/Reset couple times - does not help
* Try with Settings/Device Connection Aid/Device Connection Aid in Garmin Connect enabled and disabled - does not help
* Try syncing with another phone - I tried my wife's phone which is exactly same model, and my secondary Android phone (ZTE Blade A612) - both fail to pair in the exactly same way

Garmin Connect on the phones is at the latest version 4.10. All phones I've tried have all updates installed. I have no problems pairing and syncing with my old watch fenix 3 so I'm inclined to think that the problem is the watch. I've checked the forum and it seems the majority of complains is for connectivity with IPhone but it seems to be about losing connection when I cannot get the watch even to pair to smartphone in the first place.

Question: has anyone here had success with Fenix 5X Plus + Sony Xperia X Compact? I'm trying to figure out if this combination works at all and if I'm just unlucky with a particular model. At this point I'm on verge of sending the watch back and thinking if I should bother ordering replacement or if I should just get my money back. I guess I'll try the latest beta firmware first but I'm not particularly optimistic as the changelog doesn't seem to list any fixes which would be relevant to my problem.

P.S. I left a message to Garmin support via a form on the website on the 30th Aug and haven't seen any response at all. Is it supposed to be that slow? It is like 6 days ago or 4 days ago if I count business days only.
  • Welcome !

They were some issue with Android phone on Oreo 8.1 in May for owner of F5X. I know your phone is on 8.0 but perhaps it could unblock something ?

Anyway, someone has found a solution by installing a previous version of Garmin Connect on this mirror site.

As Garmin is sleeping on both ears most of the time my advice would be to phone them.

Also you can download the last Beta and tell the Beta team about your BT issues if they are not fixed by this last Update.
At least you could have someone of Garmin answering to your SOS email. (The email address is the Beta thread pinned at the top of the forums...)

And here is the link to download Garmin connect mobile 3.20.3:

  • You should try the last Beta and check if this bug has been cleared.
If not get in contact with the Beta team. At least you will have someone answering you... :-)
And try to phone Garmin. It worked much better that way for me.
  • Update: I've just tried the last Beta (4.65) and the update has fixed the problem: it pairs and syncs now. Downgrading Garmin Connect was not necessary. I guess I keep my new watch after all :)
