  • I just did the recommended soaking of my watch- left it on a table in the garden recording an activity. A few syncs with my PC and phone later, EPO still says "expired"
    Any suggestions?

    Anyone else with this issue??

    Same problem with me:
    EPO expired
    After sync : EPO expired
    After GPS FIX: EPO expired

Yep. Syncing with Garmin Express doesn't fix this either. I got some weird GPS tracking yesterday (starting point was across a lake)- track was good otherwise:

  • For those still having the “EPO Expired” issue, I have been having the exact same issue with both my Fenix 5 and Fenix 5+. After some messing around last night, I found that it was Garmin Express responsible for dropping an Expired EPO file on to the watch. If I closed Garmin Express completely (close on the system tray in Win 10), then deleted the EPO.bin files on the watches before ejecting from USB, the watches would initially show “EPO Missing” until after a few syncs with Garmin Connect Mobile (GCM), at which point I got “EPO Current”. If I hooked up to Garmin Express again, the good EPO file from GCM would get overwritten by a bad EPO file from Express. So, until this is fixed, the key is to always close Express and delete the EPO.bin file before ejecting, every time you’ve hooked up the watch to your PC/Mac. Unsurpringly, my Fenix 5+ was back to it’s normal rapid GPS lock before my run this morning and the GPS track of the Run was better than my last 3 runs with the expired EPO (and yes, I did do a 30 minute static GPS soak with both watches last week, after the GPS 2.23 update). So having a curent EPO.bin file does appear to be important to getting good GPS tracks.

Whilst the Expired EPO files is obviously a Garmin data servers/Express thing, rather than device software, I’ve reported the issue to the Fenix beta team, so hopefully they can get the appropriate people to fix the bug in the data servers.

Is this correct? as far as i know the EPO saves you some seconds for GPS adquisition (pre-cache stuff) so no relevant for track accuracy...

  • The challenge is that we just don’t know if the EPO helps get a fix with more satellites before you start moving (have you ever tried to get a lock without EPO whilst already running; it takes ages). More satellites locked can only help with track accuracy. If only Garmin brought back the satellite/constellation info screens that the Fenix 2 and earlier used to have.....
  • I followed Crispin's nstructions and EPO is current again. GPS signal picked up in less than 15 seconds.

    Pretty good accuracy too!
  • A follow-up to the small battery drain improvements after installing the firmware 4.64 upgrade:

During a 12 mile (1 hour, 34 minutes) using GPS + GLONASS, a Stryd and active bluetooth phone connection (but no music from the watch) used 11.9% battery (which seemed ok, but not great).

In the hour immediate after the run, drained 2.75% (high).

Monitored the drain for the next several hours making sure not to use the watch for anything else (except the bluetooth connection to the phone).
    Hour 2 - 1.26%
    Hour 3 - 0.84%
    Hour 4 - 0.69%
    Hour 5 - 0.26%
    Hour 6 - 0.70%

    …then I switched back to the 935.

The drain seems slightly better than before the firmware upgrade, but it still seems too high in the hours immediately following a run.

    • For those having EPO problems, I believe this is related to a change in Garmin Express. I had the chance to setup a new laptop from work last night that is going to replace my thin and light travel system. I installed a new instance of express on the new laptop (6.7.2.0 windows) and that laptop consistently gets me an expired EPO when i sync with it. The older install (6.5.0.1) on my previous unit gets me a current EPO every single time.

As a last test I upgraded the older install to current and the EPO delivered by this laptop is now always expired.

Bottom line, stay away from express for a bit. I sent both current and expired EPO files and version info to the beta software team and they responded that they would pass the info onto the express team for resolution.
