    hi beta admin :)

..now that Garmin US support has listed basically every modern phone sold since 2017 bluetooth issue and running dynamics, what do we, the people who give you money, have to do to get this issue not escalated, but RIGHT TO THE TOP of being fixed? As reminder the phones and garmin devices affected as told to me today by garmin USA are...

    (snip)

I guess I am in the dark. What is the bluetooth issue? I've had zero issues with bluetooth and my phone/watch?
  • On the bright side if you run wearing a fenix 3 at same time as a 5 plus, you avoid the errors just look stupid lol
  • Any news on Virtual Racer, still not working.

Hi everyone, first time caller, long time listener.

I just wanted to share my observations and experience with my new Fenix 5X Plus using v4.20, v4.59, v4.61, and v4.64. One of my colleagues has the same model but uses an Android phone so we're able to compare performance between the two.

I received my fenix on Monday evening of last week. I charged it to 100% and applied the new map updates (~2GB) and the v4.20 firmware. By Wednesday I had noticed that the battery drain was fairly significant. Watch showed about 50% by Wednesday evening.

During two runs last week, the unit completely quit recording metrics and the watch face switched from the running screens to the clock. If I wasn't keeping a close eye on my pace, I may not have noticed it cut out as quickly. I was able to get the unit to record data again after hitting the start button and returning to the run screen. However, this still resulted in a gap in data in connect during this time. This affected my numbers for both runs.

After installing v4.64 there was a noticeable increase in battery life. I speculate that this is because the 5X is no longer losing the Bluetooth connection to my iPhone 7.
Once my colleague mentioned that his Bluetooth connection is always active (because it shows connected on his watch face) but rarely uses the connect app on his phone, it sounded like that was the culprit.

While v4.64 fixes the Bluetooth related battery drain issue, it does not fix the communication issues with the Weather or Calendar widgets. These widgets work for a short period of time and then fail (shows red flag on top of widget with exclamation point). It's possible to re-pair the watch in the connect app, which can fix this issue for a brief period, but it's not a permanent solution. The connection fails again and is as temperamental as ever. By "fixed" I mean that data in the widget updates without having to open the Connect app on my phone.

After running v4.64, I figured I would try v4.61 and v4.59. Neither build fixes the Weather and Calendar widget communication, but all three do help with overall battery life which I assume is because Bluetooth isn't polling for a connection.

Also, all builds still exhibit the Connect IQ Date bug. I believe this is caused because of some fundamental change in calculating the date in relation to GMT. My time zone is GMT -5 and we are currently observing daylight saving time. At GMT -4, Connect IQ watch faces change the date to one day in the future. So the date is correct until 8PM, then it jumps a day.

My colleague does not see these issues on his Android phone and we feel the issues I'm seeing are related to the Bluetooth communication between IOS and the 5X. He is running v4.20.

So now, I have a $900 watch that I can either use v4.20 on and have a watch that lasts 3 days, or I can use a beta version and have the date bug and broken weather and calendar widgets.

One *work around*, if you want to call it that, is to leave the Connect app open on your iPhone. This seems to keep the Bluetooth from having to do much polling and the widgets work for the most part.

Two more observations - the Bluetooth fades in and out on runs if I use the 5X music feature and my Bose SoundSport headphones. Pretty disappointing considering they're on the compatibility list specifically.

And you can't mount the 5X in OS X and get direct file access without using the Android File Transfer app.

I'm going to give it a few more weeks and see how things pan out. If the Bluetooth and date bug get fixed, I can live until the widget connections get fixed. If not, it's going back to the store and I'm going back to the 920XT I got on ebay.

Apologies if a lot of this is already common knowledge; but I've only had the device for about a week. At the very least this should provide a "current state" of this device for prospective buyers and current users alike.

    Hi

I received my Garmin Fenix 5x Plus Sapphire on Saturday. Awesome watch, but from day one I am facing software issues. And this is happening with the watch worth 1300 $AUD. Never had any issues with Samsung Gear S3 worth only 400 $AUD.

Garmin, please fix Connect IQ watch face date bug. It should not be very complicated. I am at GMT+10.

    Thank you

Does anyone know if it is worth it to email the beta team with feedback? I'm going to assume they're well aware of the iOS and Connect IQ watch face date issues, but would it help to get more feedback or is it just going to be annoying?

Darius, you are likely going to run into problems by running beta developmental software. If you want a stable watch, re-install the latest public release, the beta isn't for you. The instructions to do so are found at the bottom of this page: https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=14335#Instruct
