Training Status

So I got my 5+ a few weeks ago upgrading from a Vivoactive 3. I did a couple outdoor runs to get the training status to start working and have been working out with it updating as expected. Today it switched back to a No Status reading and said I need to do 2 outdoor runs again.

Do you need to continually do outdoor runs to get Training Status to work? I do treadmill work and a lot of indoor biking and elliptical along with weightlifting. My training load and recovery time continues to update but status has quit working. Anyone who has had this feature longer than I have can give any insight on this? Thanks.
  • Work ok here, i only do indoor biking . Used the watch for one week.
  • You need to have minimum 7 days of history to get Training Load. Also - I think you need to use heart rate, but I'm not sure.
  • I will try to explain as I understand it (somebody may be able to link to an older post that explains it better):

To get training load your fenix needs heart rate data. Swimming without an HRM tri/swim, for example, will therefore not contribute to your training load. Training load for a sessions is dependent on your heart rate data and (as I understand) your VO2max. However, this seems to work for you.

To update your training status, your fenix needs more information. Knowing how hard you are exercising (i.e. training load and heart rate data) does not provide enough information to objectively determine whether this training is resulting in improved or worse performance / fitness. For this the fenix also needs updated VO2max data that is obtained by objectively assessing your performance. This can be done in two ways:
    - Running outside
    - Cycling (outside or inside) with a power meter

If this is not done regularly (at leats once a week, I think) your VO2max measurement becomes outdated and you lose your training status even though training load continues to be measured.
  • Got ya. Yeah I wear a HRM-TRI whenever I workout so I'm getting advanced metrics but haven't been doing outdoor workouts.

It's not a major issue I guess as I'm a personal trainer so as long as training load is fairly accurate that should be enough to have a general idea that I'm working my light/med/heavy workload days as intended. I do a decent amount of indoor bike training clients so I may invest in a power meter.

    Thanks for the explanation.
  • I think that there is something wrong with your watch. Try to do a reset or hard reset because since i got my Fenix 5 Plus i only did i think 4 runs outside at the most and now because of my rehab i only do cycling indoor and i always get Training Status. Even my Vo2Max get updates.
