Garmin Varia Vision + HRM4

I paired my Varia Vision (FW 3.50) to the 5x Plus (FW 4.20) today to try it out on a casual volunteer ride. Easy pace so lots of time to play around with gadgets.

It paired up fine, I scrolled through a couple screens and seemed like it would work at least as good as my 5x. But as soon as I got started on my ride I noticed my HRM4 has dropped (This never happens) The HRM4 would not reconnect until I turned off the Varia Vision sensor in the 5x Plus. Strange, but I had similar problems at various FW levels early on with the O.G. 5x.

Note: I also has a speed and cadence sensor on at the time, but I did not notice if my other sensors dropped out.
  • Try this workaround; disconnect smartphone (in controls menu). I had this issue in previous fw, and it would appear that the bug fix did not make it into this update.

That was a good idea, tried it real quick. Nope it connected and dropped right away, my other sensor at the time dropped at the same time. I am not having any other sensor drop out issues unless the Varia Vision is connected.

I headed out for a road ride today and my Edge 1000 was dead for some reason. My road bike has a Garmin wheelspeed sensor, Powertap pedals, Varia radar, and I have Varia Vision and normally use an OLD Garmin HR strap. I knew those things should all work with my 5x+ (and my 5x before them), but I had never needed to try. But today I did, and I was worried because I had seen this thread yesterday.

Anyway, it all worked for me. I did have one very brief disconnect between the 5x+ and the Vision during the ride, but it was brief and came back on its own. Data looks great from everything, so I don't think there was any large drop out. I do *not* recall ever even having a brief drop between the 1000 and the Vision, but it is what it is. I'm pretty amazed all this stuff works to a WATCH at all.

Oh, and my watch was also connected to my iPhone X during the ride as I was seeing notifications in my Vision during the ride, too.

Anyway, just an FYI. It's not some kind of massive problem, anyway.

Interesting. Can you please share what FW version you were on for the 5x and the Vision? I'm going to try it again tonight on my road bike which also has a power-meter and electronic shifting sensors configured on my watch. I will try it with and without the HRM4, I have updated to the latest beta firmware as of yesterday.

Everything was completely up to date. I'm kind of OCD about that. Sorry, should have mentioned that.

Starting to think it might have something to do with the HRM4 since that's the biggest difference between our setups.

That's why I had it in the title Varia Vision + HRM4 :) ....It is still doing it when the HRM4 is connected.
