Activity Auto-Start

I recently upgraded from a Vivoactive 3. On the Vivo after 1 min of running or 10 min of walking the watch would prompt if I wanted to start tracking the activity and would include the data up to that point. I haven't been able to find any setting like that on the 5 plus. Am I just missing it somewhere or to record an activity do I always need to go through the menu and start it manually?

I hope you just missing a setting somewhere because if the 5 has this ability then it would be marvellous.

Apparently the new Apple watch will have this feature too.
  • Isn't this the Move IQ setting? I believe I read that function to be exactly this. Recognize the activity. Although have not yet tried it.
  • MoveIQ and Auto Activity Start must not be confused as being the same thing.

MoveIQ is the detection of i.e. a walk or a run, but without recording it other than logging as a MoveIQ event without any other information than type of activity and duration. (i.e. walk 30 mins)

As an "extension" of MoveIQ there is (at least on the VA3) something called Auto Activity Start, and when enabled, the watch can start a proper activity which then is recorded in the same way and with the same stats/data as a normal manually started activity.
  • SAHO has it right. I would think that since the Vivoactive 3, an almost year old watch with less functionality has the ability that the 5 plus line would have it. I still haven't come across it yet and couldn't find anything in the manual. Hopefully Garmin adds the feature in an update. Don't know why it wouldn't have been included in the box.
  • I had the VA3 before, and Auto Activity Start had to be enabled in the "main settings", but also in the specific settings for the desired activity type. (i.e. walk or run). Also, you had related settings in GC/GCM (duration treshold before an activity is started etc.).

I've also upgraded to the F5+ and I can't find anything about Auto Activity Start anywhere either. I only tested it a few times on the VA3 and I found the reliabilty to be a bit glitchy, so I went back to just starting activities manually. I agree that it's strange that the newer F5+ doesn't have it - maybe the feature has been ditched?
  • I'm in the same boat .Come from VA 3 Music and loved this feature. Feature request please to Garmin. It seems crazy that a watch so much more advanced and expensive doesn't have the feature

...and there is probably the reason why - it's "a bit glitchy".

I've never seen this on any of the devices I've had - 305, 310, 910, 920, 935, F5s+, F5+. Auto pause yes. Auto start no.
  • One reason could be that there are a number of activities on the f5+ family that aren't on the va3. In general, the va3 is a much simpler device.

How would auto-start tell the difference between walking and hiking for example?

I'd also say...be careful what you wish for. I had a VS4 before coming over to a 5+, and that thing was....spastic at best. Because of the MoveIQ and who knows what else, it was assuming my calorie burn daily was 8k+ and the WDR distance wasn't great either.

Auto Start is nice for walking the dog at 5am, but generally I find myself more "in the habit" with the Fenix than the VS4 anyway. And I still get the step credit regardless.

Now, "Auto Not Crash When Saving Activity" might be worthwhile for my SO's 5S+ : )
