Firmware 4.00 Release

My Fenix 5 plus updated to firmware 4.00 in the morning. I can't find the changelog yet.
(GPS, WIFI, Sensor Hub have same ver. as 3.56 Beta) ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1387081.jpg
  • Thanks JiriAPet. Downgrade complete :)
  • Just did a 24h test of smart watch battery life on my 5+ Fw 4.2... after 24 hours with OHR monitoring , move iq, BT on, walking about 16000 steps, and wearing it the whole time. Battery % went from 100 to 93. 7% in 24 hours is better than advertised.
  • If any one has problems after updating to 4.2 FW I propose to do a hard reset after updating (of course you will need to re-set the watch and reinstall the apps)...
After that check if you still have problems with sleep/battery drain/swim etc...

I am using the 4.2 FW and I don't see any problems with activities or battery life (around 8% per day with IQ watch face), the watch behaves normally (I just can't say anything about swimming)...
  • Installed 4.2, did a hard reset and charged to 100% on Friday night. After two 10-mile runs and 2+ hours of kayaking, I’m down to 17% in less than two days. Each run (under 90 minutes) zapped about 20% of the battery. That doesn’t seem right.

Have done this, and more (deleted full watch content) and now watch didn't shows up native maps nor does it be able to make Garmin pay running like before.
Have done a hard reset again, downloaded full firmware with webupdate and restore maps with Garmin express and nothing. No more native maps.

Did you have any advice, looks like a numeric certificat has gone away while suppressing content ?
  • I'm sorry to hear that. Did you make a backup of the watch content before erasing data?

The map files (at least in the european version) are in the /GARMIN directory:
    gmapbmap.img - 46,8 MB - the worldwide base map
gmapdem.img - 919 MB - worldwide DEM data (Digital Elevation Model)
    gmapprom.img - 2,09 GB - TopoActive Europe map (part 1)
    gmapprom1.img - 3,78 GB - TopoActive Europe map (part 2)
gmapsup1.img (also 2 and 3) - the golf course files

The map files are not included in the firmware so the watch cannot restore them after you erase the content of /garmin directory. What is more weird Garmin Express seems to download and install the worldwide 'golf course files' only (gmapsup1, 2 and 3)... it doesn't show or restore the TOPOActive map files.

I can try to help you and send the .img files from my watch, they don't have the .unl files so they should work. PM me with you email.

Also remember you can use freeware maps in the watch, for example from garmin.openstreetmap.nl

The created *.img file of you country should be put in /GARMIN directory of the watch (you can name it anything with the .img)

I don't know which file could be needed for Garmin Pay, it does not work in my country. Just to check what else you are missing the listing of /garmin folder of my watch is attached below:

Thanks for your answer and for your time.
Having called French Garmin support, the tech says he wanted to send the full content of the wath, but never received the mail (check spam too, of course). He says that MTP mode makes things more difficult, but dind't know that it was the only mode to see files in Garmin Watch.
Have done a mail to teck support. In the report i have sayed that all maps files are in the watch i.e : GMAPSUP1 2 3 with exctensions .gma .img .unl. They were regenerated by Gamin Express (i can selecte all three that are visible in Garmin Express. But native maps are not selectible within Maps app in the watch (none appear) after reinstall.
Maybe can you modify your Tuto : Hard reset, firmware reinstall, data location and backup! by including that at this time for Garmin Plus Series, it not recomanded to delete full content of the watch.
I'm interested in to PM my e-mail you for full content of your watch (Fenix 5 Plus here). Give you my e-mail adress in it.

    Best regards.

  • After the abysmal battery life exhibited by 4.20 a couple of days ago I fully charged the battery, removed the 2 apps (FindMyCar & SendPoints) and 2 Widgets(CountDownWidget & MyInfo).

I then reinstalled FindMyCar, SendPoints & MyInfo, 12 hours later the battery was still @ 100% so I rebooted and the battery had dropped (I cannot recall the amount).

So I charged again and at 22:00 last night I took the watch off charge and rebooted, since then I have not done any activity and so in nearly a day it is doing the expected 1% every 3 hours. It is almost down to the second, so much so that I would almost suspect Garmin have just written a battery gauge based on time rather than battery usage.
  • ???? Is 1% per 3 hours too good now? ;)

It works out at 8% per day which is what I got on 3.10 and if you look at my calculations from previous posts meets with Garmin's standby claims. This was never an issue in 3.10, the real issue is the PABD. I have not yet done a GPS activity on this release to see if things have improved, given that the release note doesn't claim to have fixed the issue I am guessing not.
