Firmware 4.00 Release

My Fenix 5 plus updated to firmware 4.00 in the morning. I can't find the changelog yet.
(GPS, WIFI, Sensor Hub have same ver. as 3.56 Beta) ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1387081.jpg
  • Forerunner - I've been using Garmin devices for a number of years, and I think this is the only time I'm seen them stop a FW rollout. And to me it's a good thing as they caught it early! I'm sure there will a new release very soon.

  • I just spoke with a Garmin rep., and he explained that they typically roll out a new update to about 20% of registered users per day. The 4.0 firmware update has been pulled for now because some of those who first got it reported problems. He anticipates that it will become available again within a week.

i'm on 4.0 and i don't have any problems. my use is pretty bog-standard, but extraordinarily i haven't seen anybody else complaining on this forum either. having said this, i think i've yet to see a problem-free garmin firmware so if their new policy is to pull updates any time problems are reported we'll never see any updates on our devices
  • Folks, I am on release 4.0.0.0 since Satursday 11/8. I have serious issues with indoor swimming lap count.

I had a Fenix 5S up to 1 month ago, and it would count the indoor swimming laps without any issues.

I switched to a Fenix 5S Plus, one month ago. For the first 3 weeks the swimming lap accuracy was spot on. Since Satursday (11/8) it adds 10 laps after the first dozen,
It counts perfectly from 1 to 12
    At 12 t shows 22
    At 22 it shows 42
etc etc and 72 it shows 142.
That is on the watch. Also on the watch the distance is shown as a multiple of the laps shown and the pool distance.

However, when I sync the data back to Garmin Connect I see the correct distance. Of course, while swimming you need to see the lap count / distance there and then to know how much more you need to do ...

I believe the issue for me started happenning with the latest firmware update (4.0.0.0) !!!

I hope guys @ Garmin can fix this soon because this bug spoils all the fund in swimming....

Odd that nearly a week after it was released, I've still not received an update and don't have one pending via Garmin Express.

If you take a look at the vacant jobs at Garmin (USA), you might either get the impression that Garmin replaces it's entire software development team, that all the software guys are pissed by Garmin and leave or they simply do not have enough developers to get the work done correctly ;).

Check my post earlier on this page that explains why you are not able to get access to firmware 4.0.
  • Hello everyone,

I just noticed that the current Firmware version increased from 4.00 to 4.20 while the fixes within the patch remain the same.

A clear sign to me that they are working behind the scenes on it.

    Best regards
    Christian
  • 4.20 is out, I never even received 4.00.... :-D ok, keep waiting for the percentage to grow on that rollout counter....
  • What a mess and unprofessional software development/management at Garmin - really the worst i ever experienced!
That funny "20%" guinea pig method is a testimony for "ahmm... we don't exactly know what we are doing, so let's only infect 20% of our customers with the new firmware-experiment so that we don't have to exchange 100% of the delivered watches".

I don’t think there’s a software company in existence that has ever released an OS or OS update without bugs, so I don’t think it’s fair to damn Garmin for taking a cautious approach to release.

I don't think what you see is a "rollout counter". Based on what a Garmin rep. told me, it just means that the are rolling the new firmware version out at 20% at a time to registered users. If there are no reported problems, he said they would speed that process up.
