Running Heartrate

I have noticed the heart rate sensor being a bit off, during walks and runs but today confirmed what I had suspected.

I had gone on a hill training run - so sprints up a hill with a weighted vest and ankleweights - of about 15kg.

I could feel my heart pounding and I'd guess that my heart rate was about 150 (based on beats per second)

Yet the device noted it was around 90-100. I'm pretty sure I'm not that fit yet!

After the session, I was walking back home, and starting to record walking - and then - it said I had a heart rate of 136!

The band was kept equally tight in both instances.

I've also noticed that the stress reading varies between wearing the device on my right or left hand, and sometimes so does the heart rate.

Has anyone else had this problem?

  • I find the heavier devices, like the Fenix 5x plus, move more during exercise and therefore their OHR is less accurate... especially when the wrist is in more vertical positions or is changing orientation alot. When I swap to the lightweight Vivoactive, there is less misses and better correlation to a chest strap. Having said that, I have found a band that works pretty well with the 5x plus...better when I trim my arm hairs under the sensor. Geeky for sure but I figure no worse than the tan line since the watch is worn 24/7.
  • My experience is that OHR reading is not responsive enought to deal with sudden changes in HR. Thus it is absolutelly unsuitable for interval training, for example. As I'm runner mainly I can use it for cycling where averadges are good enought for me. But I do my running with chest strap.
