Hello & some questions

Hello all,

being dissatisfied with my Nokia Steel HR I became 'Member of the Garmin club', got myself a Fenix 5S Plus.
Compared with my old watch, the 5S+ is already big, so the 5+ was out of the question.

I read a little on the forum here, the battery topic being a little alarming for me (Steel HR easily does two weeks, but cannot be compared honestly)
Of course I played around with the watch during the first day, the UI is still requiring time. So I should agree that I do not do the best for the battery, drown it until the end.
This brings me to my first question. When I am actively in a run while the battery runs out, will I loose this data?

I Installed a few watch-faces trying to understand what I like the most. Some of the claim to be good for the battery, therefore my second question. Will watch-faces who are on my watch but not shown actually use battery 'to be prepared for the next moment I decide to use them'?

While I send music to my watch, I noticed that 16GB is easily filled. I use my Samsung S9 normally for music during running, it has a mSD-card of 200GB, so I am kind-of spoiled. Nevertheless my third question. If the memory is 'filled' with music, what happens when a run cannot be saved on the watch anymore?

I like the idea of the display being switched on when I move my arm to watch the display. But it works only half of the time, is there a way to 'teach' the watch that I made a gesture?

Thanks in advance for your answer, highly appreciated.

with best regards,

  • To answer your questions in sequence
It should save your run up to the point that the battery dies
Only the active watch face is loaded into memory so other installed watch faces won't use any resources
Music/Maps storage is separate to main watch storage so there will always be space to save a run activity. Also activities don't take a lot of space
The two biggest battery drains are playing music and using the back-light. So I'd avoid using the back-light auto gesture, but if you want to keep using it there's no way to "train" it so it's hit and miss.

    Hope that helps!

    Hello Carl,

as said up front, highly appreciated, thank You very much.
At the moment I am worrying about battery usage. I charged in the evening to 100%, played some more with the menu and had 96% before I went to sleep. I woke up with only 89%, that's too much I would guess.
The usage of music I have been trying, playing only part of a song, just to know it is working. No further usage. On the other hand, during a workout, the 'coach' is telling me that a lap is finished and some timing information, like HR. Is this the same battery usage, as the BT connection to the headphones need to be open anyway?

Gestures are switched off again :)

    Best regards,

    Hello,

Anybody knows if I can delete maps from my watch. During installation saw it installed maps for America (At least I think I saw that :) ), these must be taking a lot of space and I do not expect to be there any time soon, can I in some way delete these to save space for other things?

    Best regards,
    Ruud
  • Whilst you can delete the map files, particularly the larger ones, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are confident in what you are doing. The pre-installed TopoActive map (of America from the sounds of it on your watch) is likely the largest file and if you delete it without backing it up first. then you will have to purchase the map again. Technically you should be able to restore the map file if you made a copy (on you PC) before deleting it, but there’s no guarantee it will work and you do it at your own risk.

Even with the full 16GB clear, it seems you are going to be dissatisfied trying to copy your entire music collection over to your 5s+. I really see my 5+ as a way to play music during activities; any other time I have my iPhone or iPad for more. So I just have playlists of exercise music (150 songs) synced over to the 5+ and that only uses 1GB. So maybe just syn over music that you’re actually going to play from the watch, remembering that it’s not going to be a satisfying experience playing music all day long from the watch, as that with kill the battery within that day (a smartphone is more sensible in that use case).

    Hello Crispin,

    Thanks for your answer.
A little bummer. Of course there are ways available to secure that I do not delete the files and re-install them later. So if such temp. deletion is not foreseen, it is certainly risky.

As for the music, well yeah, it is not my phone, where I have >150GB of music, played in shuffle during my running. I am afraid I might get bored if my collection would be only 150 songs, actually.
Of course there should be a golden middle way possible, but that means I will manually create a folder on my PC with choosen songs which I will send over, not with artists as I do now. I guess I will take that route, as I do not feel comfortable in messing with the maps myself. Pity though !!

    Thanks again !
