Low resolution map on my new fenix 5+

Got a new fenix 5 plus just today, I noticed that there are only low resolution maps.

Connected to basecamp it shows just 3 maps:
- Course view Medium SE Americas
- Course view Medium Europe Middle East …
- Course view Medium SE Pacific

Nothing about topographic maps nor routable Garmin Cycle Map EU.
Tried to update with Garmin Express software, but nothing was added.

Connecting with windows explorer in the GARMIN directory I found 4 maps files:
- gmapbmap.img (it's dimension is 48Mbyte)
- gmapsup1.img (28 Mbyte)
- gmapsup2.img (14 Mbyte)
- gmapsup3.img (12 Mbyte)

as in attached picture.

The device seams void because the free space is about 14 Gigabyte.

Any suggestion to get the promised map functions.

Thanks in advance. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1382773.jpg
  • I bought mine direct from Garmin in the US and it appears mine has the same thing on it. When I first connected to Express it downloaded updates of those maps and they were reported as the same size as the OP

Had mine a week now and have only looked at the Maps once - sorting other issues out.
Must be honest, I thought it was supposed to have some sort of Routable map and Cycling Map.
It seems I can buy the Garmin Cycle Map for about £40.00 which is a joke in itself....

I have 3 maps only - Worldwide DEM Basemap NR (whatever that is) , TopoActive Europe East, and TopoActive West.
They're all turned on by default.

Not sure which I should be using, and if its possible to get a free download of the Cycle Maps.
  • The TopoActive maps are the routeable maps with the detailed DEM data. I’ve lost the thread, but I recall a conversation on the forum where it was confirmed that the TopoActive maps installed on the 5+ series include all the data that was on the older Cycle Maps; so should be no need to buy them.
  • sducati If you are missing your TopoActive Maps, please contact your local dealer or Garmin Support Team.

Browner40 The map update that you saw was the Garmin World Wide Golf Courses.

  • Same thing, I also only have 3 maps. Bought it at the official garmin reseller

    Couple points to clarify:
    - Basecamp doesn't seem to show maps in the watch (at least mine does not)
    - The 'course view' maps updated by Garmin Express seem to be world wide golf courses! (as Garmin-Heath stated above)

Remember that choice of maps is activity specific (you can use different maps in different activities), so if you want to check which maps are in the watch then go to the menu and chose:
Settings->Activities&Apps->Map->Map Settings->Map->Configure Maps.. there you can choose which maps from the watch you want to use for the Map activity. In my watch it shows:
    - Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR
    - TopoActive Europe East 2017.30
    - TopoActive Europe West 2017.30

    Files in the /GARMIN directory:
    gmapbmap.img - 46,8 MB - the worldwide base map
gmapdem.img - 919 MB - worldwide DEM data (Digital Elevation Model)
    gmapprom.img - 2,09 GB - TopoActive Europe map (part 1)
    gmapprom1.img - 3,78 GB - TopoActive Europe map (part 2)
gmapsup1.img (also 2 and 3) - the golf course files

Also remember you can use freeware maps in the watch, for example from this place
The created *.img file should be put in /GARMIN directory of the watch.

And other thing, just like stated above if you got a fenix 5 plus watch with no maps for your region contact Garmin support!
  • Yep, you were right. I have the Worldwide DEM and the TopoActive US 2017.40 on the watch right now.
  • Hello guys

You are ofcourse supposed to get the promised maps. Here in Denmark - when you order a Fenix Plus model you get the Danish Topo Map for free. However the rest of the maps are not that great. What I have done is that I have created new maps from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ (I have selected the Routable Bicycle maps) and I am quite impressed. Almost as detailed as the Topo Maps..(For some countries even more detailed that topo).
