Tempered glass screen protector for 5S plus ?

Hi folks,

It seems the screen of the Fenix 5 plus series are a bit curved, so flat screen protectors for Fenix 5 are NOT compatible.
I confirm this for my 5S plus sapphire edition. I know the glass is not supposed to mark easily, but I like keeping my stuff in perfect condition in case I want to sell it later.
I had a screen protector left for my previous 5S but I was not able to fit it on the 5S plus because of the curvature of the screen.

Has anyone found a compatible screen protector for the 5S plus ?

What is the brand & website?
  • I actually opted for a skin rather than a tempered glass screen protector due to the slightly domed shape of the screen - https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Protector-LiQuidSkin-Coverage-Anti-Bubble/dp/B01N0Y07SK/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1531513132&sr=8-12&keywords=garmin+iq+shield

Similar to the one that robdos linked, so far holding up well for me and installation was pretty straight forward.

I believe that the non-sapphire glass is flat, and a good idea to protect if you don't want scratches. The sapphire glass is extremely scratch resistant and it is redundant to use a screen protector. A skin would work. But paying $100+ for protection and then putting a $10 aftermarket protector on it... Enjoy your excellent glass as is. My two cents. (As an extremely clumsy phone-dropper with a perfect Sapphire screen on my phone after over a year.)

thanks for the heads up :) I have to say I'm very cautious with my gear, so I know little of how hard a sapphire screen can be, and how well it can handle scratches. But I'll follow your advice and just enjoy it as is - assuming it will be hard to find a compatible screen protector anyway. Or maybe i'll just try the skin (even though I'm not too fond of the way it looks, and feels).
    Thanks !
  • If you have the base model, by all means get a protector. However, using a screen protector on a sapphire edition is nearly pointless as the crystal has a mohs hardness of 9/10, and it is my understanding that there is no oleo-phobic coating making scratching effectively impossible in normal circumstances.

I would be more concerned with the bezel, and would simply enjoy the Sapphire as is, you paid $100 extra for something significantly more durable, why put a low grade easily scratched piece of glass or plastic on there.
  • I'm wearing watches with sapphire crystals for 20 or 30 years now - Fenix, but also mechanical watches.

Never had the slightest scratch. The real problem is with the bezels, the case etc. I had a dog with his teeth amost completly destroy a brand new Swiss watch once - however, the sapphire glass still looked like out of the factory.

Sapphire might break under very special conditions, however. Like when the glass hits something very (!!!) strongly in the wrong angle, so that the force is concentrated on a specific spot, one has a problem. But in cases like that those protectors probably will not help at all. I personally never had any issues.

    Cheers

  • Sapphire is more durable against scratches, but less resistant to breaks compared to gorilla glass. So in my opinion for cycling, skiing etc. screen protector makes sense
