GPS Accuracy

Anyone else a little disappointed? I’ve completed at least 20 runs now and the majority have major anomalies in GPS tracking. Just today I’ve completed Leeds 10k and it had a spike in the GPS track that had me across the city. My 935 was much more stable.
  • I am happy with the GPS on my Fenix 5 Plus. I had the Fenix 3 HR, Fenix 3 and a few other watches before that.
I bought and returned a Suunto 9 after seeing over 10+ runs done with both that one is no better/worse than the other in the area, where I run the most.

While the Suunto 9 is a nice looking watch, it lacks a lot of the features that makes Garmins a complete package. It also currently has 3! apps and I was unable to find a way to sync a move to my phone and have that get automatically uploaded to Movescount for analysis. Optical heart rate seemed better to me on the Garmin too.

Very happy with the accuracy. I did af 65 km bike ride yesterday with my fenix 5 Plus and my old VAHR as well as my well calibrated cycling computer. I saw a difference of only 30 meters in distance across the three devices. :D

I'd say it's "OK" but not great. I did a ride with my 520 the other day and that was almost spot on the whole way round the ride, even getting the side of the road correct most of the way.
My 5 plus has me running through gardens or even the occasional house!
I'm going to try some of the other options - Galileo, GPS only etc and see how it works out.
For what I want it for it's great though.

    Hi
Can someone check my post in the FR630 Forum concerning these „Spikes“? Do they look like that? No one is answering there ...

I was thinking about upgrading to a Fenix because i had some issues with the 630 but that maybe won‘t help.

    thanks
  • gravity-slave It would be interresting if you recorded your next run with your 520 as well for comparison.
  • Don't think it's metal. Ambit 3 peak has metal part too, yet its gps accuracy is still one of the best.

From what I remember Ambit 3 Peak had the GPS antenna in the plastic 'bulky' part protruding from the bottom of the watch. The accuracy of the GPS was probably the best of all the watches I had, but there were many other inconveniences. The new Suunto 9 has a more sleek design, but from what I hear and read the accuracy does not match the Ambit 3 Peak, it is more like the Fenix series.

Was your Fenix on the bars next to the 520?

You'd be surprised how much better the tracks can be when the watch is on the bars facing the sky.

No, not side by side. Different activities but I was looking at history by the device and comparing accuracy of the trace against the track I knew I'd taken. I'm not too concerned though.
I don't have the time/resource/skill to do a side by side on the same activity with both devices so not a true like for like, more of an overview.
  • A god way testing GPS accuracy is to do out-and-back run. The tracks should be aligned.
  • Very dissapointed too but on the FEnix 5X Plus, so the problem seems global to all the Fenix plus line...
