How does climbPro define/create climbs?

Hallo 5plus users,

has anybody already made some experience with the new climbPro feature? How does the climbsPro feature define/create climbs? Is there a minimum for ascent needed (for example the climb must have an ascent > 60 meters before the climpPro feature creates a climp for it)? For the used course, the elevation plot in basecamp and on the watch itself looks the same. I would say three (1./2./3. see pics) climbs (but for shure two (1. + 3.). The climbPro feature on my 5x+ (fw 3.10) is just showing one climb. Is there something wrong?

To be clear, if I use zoom for the elevation plot in basecamp, the elevation plot looks (almost) like the shown climb. Of course I have seen courses with many climbs in the climbPro feature, I just want to understand the way it works (and used this course for asking).;) ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1371204.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1371205.bmp ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1371206.bmp ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1371211.jpg
  • I would suspect there is a criteria such as elevation gain, or a certain % of climb etc.

Sadly for where I live, it's relatively flat, so half the 'hills' probably wouldn't trigger the ClimbPro feature haha. Would be handy if the qualifying criteria (if that's the way it is calculated) was user adjustable!
  • Another interesting thing: if I create the route above with starting point half the way, my 5x+ is showing me two climbsciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1371762.bmp

I think, the way it's done, longer routes lead to longer climbs. On 35+ km route this week, I'd just get 4 climbs, but most of them were long, with some ups and downs. It kind of makes sense, on route of such length, I really don't need to know every short climb, I just want to know that the next 8km is mostly climbing, and how much I have left.

I must say I kind of like it. Yes, it has some issues. It rarely ends at a peak, it simply says the climb is over when watch decides it's not enough of a climb anymore. The average grade is mostly useless for long climbs. It may say 5% but first 6km will be more like 3% and next 2km will be 12% and that is hard to see in the graph - and unlike other values at the top, this won't update as your climb progresses, so it will still say 3% with 2km/250m left. Which at that point is just a misleading information. It relies on DEM data which are sometimes quite off (I had one climb where it was reporting about 80m more to go at the top, but there was nowhere to go anymore).

But it gives me a ballpark figure as to what is left yet, before I can get some rest. I usually switch to climb pro page for climbs and keep it there.
  • Thanks for your detailed answer. Yes, I really like this feature, but I want to know/understand how it recognized climbs...

Does this appear in Hiking App? I don’t know how to activate this function, please help
  • Choose an app (for example hike or bike)> app settings>climpPro> enable

I used it quite a bit in the hike app recently. It was awesome!
    I really liked knowing
    1. How far till the next climb
    2. How many climbs were on my route
    3. How far into the climb I was
    4. The elevation profile of the climb

  • I would like to be able to customise this screen a bit in terms of the data shown. (similar to the option for the Map overlay)

Agreed. One thing I am curious about during longer climbs, even more than total time en route or vertical speed, is my HR. Unfortunately, I cannot get it on a ClimbPro screen. It would be nice to be able to customize this.
  • You already can use the hr data field for the climpPro feature.
