How can I get more detailed topo maps?

When I bought the F5 Plus I thought the topo map would show more details like height curves when I was outside hiking. Do I have to install another map to get this?
  • From the Garmin maps you’ll need the TopoActive Pro maps to get contours; but they are expensive. The talkytoaster.me.uk maps have contour lines and more readable detail that most OSM based maps. I bought the UK 1:50k “look and feel” maps and they are certainly better than anything else I’ve downloaded on the OSM side; the price is modest and worth it in my opinion. Interestingly, the talkytoaster maps don’t have DEM data (yet), but that seems not to matter as long as you have the basic TopoActive map that came with your 5+ still installed (easily tested by getting the watch to create a course from it’s internal maps and checking the elevation profile is not flat). There are also an abundance of free maps, that sometimes have contours depending on which country you want; just do a google search for OSM maps for Garmin and you’ll start finding them.

Active JR made a video for the 5x - I presume the process is similar for the plus. He's around on these forums so maybe he can help

    Here's the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhyua8mXXF0
  • Thanks for responding :).
I just checked out talkytoaster. For Norway there is an option called Norway+. It cost only £11. That might bee worth it.

Some years ago I think I installed a map in my old Garmin Edge 810 or something. That was pretty good, but I don't remember what it was.
  • And I will try to download the map from the video. Thanks :)

Check out other osm maps first, eg http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl or http://freizeitkarte-osm.de/garmin/en/index.html#

There are others just Google for them

Talkytoaster maps are based on osm data which is free, no need to pay :)

  • Thanks :)
Wow. It takes incredibly long time to download the maps fra open street map. I downloaded the freizeitkarte, but it wasn't recommended to install it on internal memory...
  • Really? I know folks who have it on internal memory without issue. Not on a Fenix though ...

Well. Anyway, I tried to install it, but I can´t find the file that i should import in basecamp... It seems easier to install the maps in the link from the youtube video. There it is just drag and drop. Those maps takes several hours to download, so I will have to wait until tomorrow.
  • Hei, har du prøvd frikart.no? Gratis kart som funker veldig bra. (Translation: Have you tried frikart.no? Free maps that work very well)
