  • The only Garmin watches with MTP are the 645m, the va3m, and the plus devices (the ones with music). The other Garmins use Mass-storage mode, so it will be different with a f5 plus
  • False hope on the connection issue. Still several disconnects today. Have to manually force the reconnection or restart iPhone Bluetooth. Never happened with the F5.

Yeah, me too. Whenever I get a new fenix (f2, f3, f5, now f5+) I seem to have to go through this pain for the first 2 or 3 months, if the watch and my iPhone get separated (especially overnight), then often they refuse to reconnect without me either turning the watch or phone off and back on again, or sometimes re-starting GCM or putting my iPhone into Flight Mode and then back out again. I really don't understand why we have to go through this yet again for every new device.

If that’s your experience with that many devices - why don’t you just wait 2-3 months from release before you buy then? I’m not saying it’s acceptable by Garmin to put «beta products» on the market, but you seem to be fully aware of their approach, yet you still rush to the shop whenever they release something new. By waiting you could spare yourself from the frustration and you might even save some money!
  • Sorry but I don't follow your logic - there are advantages of the new devices over the previous ones that have by far outweighed the 'issues' and have informed my purchase decisions. For example, I chose not to spend another 3 months living with all the random ANT device dropouts that plague my f5, and that's far more important to me than glitchy app connectivity. However, that doesn't mean I'm wrong to express disappointment and frustration at Garmin when the same old bugs we see all the time come around yet again.
  • I did this morning an open water session whose result was terrible. Watch was in GPS and Galileo mode with a good fix before entering the water. As you can see trace is not good and the watch also stopped registering Pace and distance after I pressed the lap button (no auto lap configured)

  • NeilJonesOnline: I understand your point to some extent - however if I had an F5 with major issues like you describe then I would definitely wait at least a couple of months to see if those issue were fixed as well before paying up that kind of money for the plus version assuming/hoping that the new version doesnt include the flaws from the previous.

Anyways - my point were simply that I see a lot of people being surprised from all the bugs new releases from Garmin seems to have, and that you with your experience should not be surprised of Garmin’s mode of operandi when it comes to releasing new devices.
  • Why do you think I just "assumed/hoped" the issues were resolved? - I did my homework, read reviews and feedback on here which confirmed they were, and I also bought from a retailer with a strong returns policy just in case

And surprise and frustration are two very different things.
  • Okay, now that you’ve given more context I stand corrected, my bad. ;)
  • It appears that this 3.21 release is still not available for APAC models - what is the latest version for APAC models? I purchased my 5+ last week here in Japan, from a Japan retailer, and have been unable to connect to Garmin Express or Garmin Connect on my iPhone. Even got a replacement sent out - no change. On Garmin Express, the software recognizes the watch and correct serial number, but says 'device not compatible' with Garmin Express. Interestingly, none of the APAC support websites recognize the serial numbers, but US/Europe support websites -do- recognize the serial numbers, and show the watches as a Japan model.

The watches I received were on version 2.60. I received a GarminDevice.xml file from Garmin support which temporarily updates the phone to 2.70, at which point I am semi-able to connect to Garmin Express, but still not able to connect to Garmin Connect on my Iphone(s), and updating to Connect is patchy (activities sync, daily activities do not). No Wi-fi. I was thinking that updating the phone to 3.21 would solve the issues, but apparently it's not for APAC models yet.

Is there a newer version than 2.60 available for APAC models?
  • 3.10 is the current release on APAC models and I suspect all others
