No cycle maps on 5X plus?

i've upgraded from 5x to 5x+, and the new device seems to have no cycle maps installed? am i missing something, or is the 5x+ less generous with pre-installed maps than the 5x?

thanks
  • Garmin-Heath, this is not a settings issue. The European device just doesn't have as many included maps as its predecessor alas (i cant speak for any other regions)

The fenix 5 Plus series come with routable Topo maps. If you have a European version of the fenix 5 plus then you should have TopoActive Europe installed on your device.
  • What is missing in the Topo maps vs the cycle map that is installed on the regular 5x?

I contacted Garmin Belgium about the missing cycle map on the Fenix5+ and they claimed that the cycle map is now included in the Topoactive maps (there are two for Europe = Europe East and Europe West) what seems to me strange because the one I have on my 5X+ are 2017.30 the same version I had on my 5X (and Garmin Express says that my 5X+ is up to date) !

  • Yes, why then not let the 5x devices have this new Topoactive maps so that the 5x users could enjoy more 1 gb free space for other maps etc. Who is missing out here? 5x or plus series users?
  • To clarify, the fenix 5 Plus series is loaded with TopoActive which is a topographic map that includes Open Street Mapping (which includes POIs, streets, etc).
  • Garmin-Heath my understanding is that the TopoActive is actually an upgrade over the cycle map that the previous generation supported. TopoActive includes the cycle data + additional info. So what originally appeared to be a downgrade in mapping capability is actually an upgrade.

The 5X has the same Topoactibe map = Topoactibe Europe East and Topoactive Europe West and a third map = cycling map. And the version of the Topoactive I had on my previous 5X was exactly the same as I now have on my 5X+.

So unless maps with the same name and same version number on the 5X+ are different than on the 5X, the 5X had more maps than the 5X+ has.

And the product specification of the 5X and 5X+ list the same maps for both devices = Topoactive and cycling.
  • I can't speak for the rest of the world, but in the US the maps show up as totally different maps. On the 5x there is the Topo US 100k v6 vs the TopoActive US 2017.30. From what i understand the new map on the 5x includes the cycling data from the cycling map for the US as well.

I can say for a fact that the 5x map doesn't have all the trails i'm hiking on a backpacking trip next week. The topoactive does.
