[Fenix 5 Plus] Inconsistent "Ask for passcode" behaviour of the Wallet

The behaviour of the wallet is not consistent.

Expected behaviour:
If I enter the correct wallet passcode I should not be asked for the passcode again for 24h provided the watch is worn, no matter if I perform a contactless transaction or not.

Actual behaviour:
I am asked for the passcode again when opening the wallet if I had entered the wallet, entered the passcode and quit it by pressing "back" key without performing a transaction

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start wallet
2. Enter the correct passcode
3. Exit with "back" key

If the transaction times out or I the wallet via "Controls Menu" I don't need to enter the passcode again within 24hours.

Note: The watch is being worn at all times, I can reproduce the issue each time.

  • Wierd. I’ve just followed your exact steps and Im not asked for the passcode a second time. I wonder what’s different.
  • I had similar today but mine was on timeout

I was in the queue so went into wallet and entered pass code. Queue was moving slowly so watch timed out. Got to checkout and went back into wallet and had to enter pass code again.
  • Ok the issue seems to be more complex than described by me in the fist post:
I restarted the watch and then I needed to enter the passcode each time no matter if I quit with the "back" key, it times out or I quite via "Controls Menu". (The heart widget was showing my pulse in the meantime).

Now, after a few minutes everything started working as expected, so I restated the watch again and again I was being asked for the passcode again for a minute or two and then everything started working as expected again.

So it looks that the watch needs to be worn for some time before the wallet actually recognises that it's being worn.

Mine had been worn for 3 hours and i still had the issues I described in my post
  • My few thoughts ...

I own both a Forerunner 645 and a Fenix 5 Plus, both having Garmin Pay activated ... I must say that the Fenix does a better job recognizing being worn and behaves exactely as expected ... I have worn it for a week now, and it never asks for a passcode during the day - only once in the morning when putting it on. The Forerunner however regularly (2-3 times a day) asks for the passcode again ...
  • How easy is it to input the passcode? I don't want to fiddle around in the queue if it takes an age to input in the code.
  • Depends on your code... 1111 is easily entered :-)

honestly it takes a couple of seconds and I hate doing it in fron of a cashier...
  • I have tested the issue a bit more AND I can't find any pattern anymore...
Sometimes I don't need to enter the passcode but never longer than for a few hours.

Sometimes I need to enter the passcode twice when trying to pay consecutively (most frequent case) or even more times.

Garmin could you please fix it since it's a showstopper for the payment feature since the passcode entry is quite inconvenient and it's frustrating to do it in front of the cashier.
  • Garmin, any update on the topic?

Due to the poor, buggy UX there is no reason to use Garmin Pay instead of the competition (Apple Pay).
Garmin Pay was the only reason which motivated me to migrate to F5Plus from F5 (which I kind of regret now).
  • I wrote to the beta test team a few weeks ago as I experienced the problem described in the first post above. Haven't heard anything from them.

In my mail, I also proposed some improvements to make it more functional:
    • Make a Pause function in Garmin pay, so you can enter the pass code, set Garmin Pay on pause and then unpause when you reach the cashier.
    • Change the Wallet icon in controls when a pass code is needed, so you will know already before selecting Wallet if you will need to use a pass code.
    • Make it possible to use a hotkey for opening Wallet.
