Immense frustration with connectivity issues!

I've had the 5X Plus since last Friday and the connectivity issues have been nothing but frustrating. I had problems initially connecting my Fenix 3HR with my phone, so I expected that. Thankfully, the 3HR phone connection issues were resolved with the first firmware update. This 5X Plus is MUCH worse. It doesn't seem to want to connect to anything... at least not for very long. I've had nothing but problems keeping it connected to the following devices:

Samsung Note8
Garmin HRM-Tri
Garmin Footpod
Senso Bluetooth Headphones

The device will connect, then it will disconnect, then it will connect, then disconnect... you get the picture. I saw a post earlier where someone noted that they were having a similar problem with the HRM-Tri, but their device seemed to disconnect at a set interval (around 2mins). Mine connects and disconnects whenever it pleases, which is often!

I also have the watch paired with two 4iiii power meters, but haven't done an outdoor ride with either, yet, so I don't know if those have issues, or not. I did have a bit of a problem initially pairing the two devices, though.

The only device that hasn't seemed to have any issues is my Amazon Tap that I use as a bluetooth speaker. Then again, I have only played about 5 minutes worth of music on it as I was testing the Music mode of the watch.

I can understand - to some extent - pairing issues with non-native Garmin devices, but to have your HRM and footpods constantly connecting and disconnecting... well that's unacceptable. Especially at a, $850 price point!!! Really, Garmin, did you test this device with anything???

The watch seems to discharge much faster than my Fenix 3HR, also. It was fully charged yesterday at 7am, and today at 7:48am, it's down to 61%. That was with a 35min run. I don't have the Pulse OX on, so I suspect the pairing issues are the problem, but I could be wrong.

Anyone else having these problems?

Garmin, when can we expect a firmware update? If not in the next couple of weeks, I have to seriously consider returning the Fenix 5X Plus and strapping my trusty Fenix 3HR back on (thankfully, I haven't sold it yet!). I have to think it's better to wait until the kinks have been worked out on this watch and get it on sale in the future. That's assuming the problems can be worked out at all. My understanding is the original Fenix 5 series still has issues with connectivity.

No problems with my iPhone X, cadence-sensor on bike works fine too ... but my hrm tri ... no more data after two minutes.
  • Google pixel 2 running beta Android software has been great. I gave up on music(dropouts) after trying airpods and Jabra elite 65t.
  • I've had decent luck so far with my Galaxy S8+ and Jaybird Run headphones. I'll know more with more testing.
  • Zero issues with my Samsung S8. I pilot my music player on it and use "find my phone" everyday. No mismatches in the connections.
It seems this issues are common with Iphone no ? Those apple product are so xenophobics... (I got my share of Iphones, Ipads and Macbooks at home...)
  • I've experienced issues with BT on an iPhone X. It seems to be that after a connection is lost (like I walk away from my phone for a few minutes) I have to cycle the BT on the watch, or the phone. I have not had much luck just force-closing the app and restarting. I had a Fenix 3 connected to this phone, and had really no issues reconnecting. Figured it would get addressed in a FW update sometime.

I must correct my earlier post: Yes, massive connection problems with my iPhone X
  • I have problems with Fenix 5 Plus and iPhone X. Cadens, speed, tempe, foot pod and HRM-TRI all looses connection with the clock. If BT Connection between the clock and iPhone is lost it is very hard to get connection again. I have had Fenix 3 and 5 Before without any problems, but this Clock just kills me!

The latest beta firmware 4.65 specifically targets this problem. So you might try that.

As far as I can see in the 2-3 threads about the problem, this firmware has solved all the problems between the watch and externals sensors, but some people still have problems between the watch and the phone.
  • How can I download the beta firmware?
  • I don't know how to answer that question without appearing rude. So I suggest that you wait for an official release.
