Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model

I run every day so I’m not expecting miracles. But I don’t use ant+ And I use smart recording not 1 second.

i dont know my average drain drain exactly but I ran 15k today in about 1:20 and lost 5%, but since the run I’ve lost another 4%. But that is the dreaded post activity drain.

I hope that’s all it is.

arcalius Thanks fo the info. You appear to have an amazing battery!
At the advice of Garmin.... 5S Plus [factory settings] charged to 100% and left in a window on GPS only activity until complete drain.
    This took 9hrs 15mins. [10.8% drain/hr]
Considering the watch was static [i.e the OHR turns off, and movement/cadence sensors are dormant], this is not the advertised 11hrs @9%/hr.
The watch is also new and charged with discipline over the first few cycles, following general battery longevity guidelines.
If the watch is worn on the wrist with the same settings, average battery drain is considerably higher. Will perform more tests to confirm average % drain.
Incidentally, post run, I also experience battery drain, but this appears to stabalise by consuming less power than normal in smartwatch mode over the following few hours [hope that makes sense]
I'm also on Beta 6.64, which may or may not address battery drain issues...
  • Well I charged to 100% from 22% on Thursday I’ve run 4 times since then totalling around 6.5 hours ish and I’m on 43%.

Im hoping I’ll get another two runs out of it before I need to charge again. But again...I don’t want to jinx it.
  • Well run 5 done with 31% left at 0930...have dropped to 27% since then and it appears to be a trend. Everything goes well until I hit about 25 - 30% and the. It starts to drain quickly.
  • arcalius , I notice the same thing. Post activity battery drain happens no matter what the charge, but below 30% even smartwatch mode drains rapidly. Interesting...
  • It eventually stabilised at 24% so I’m set for tomorrow’s run. May well need to put a bit of charge on to get through Wednesdays long run, but I think I’ll be set. Then I’ll do a full charge from nearly 0%. Depends on what happens tomorrow night tho. But failing that, 6 days 6 runs of around 9 or 10 hours in total...my mays isn’t great but it’s around there. Oh I hope I am not jinxing this...!!!
  • I'm more and more confused about this drain issue as many if us have it but many are slightly different.

    Is it a drain
    - is it hardware
    - is it software
Is it bad calculation of remain battery life
    - is that due to the Garmin API giving wrong values
    - are the widget devs calculating it wrong
    Is it something else?

I still think it is software related.
    Check the pic I attached.
I charged the watch full on Saturday morning. Used in SM mode all the time. except for an 8 km run on Sunday afternoon and booted the watch right after.
Now try to explain this power graph...

BTW, I switched from Battery Widget to Battery Gauge

I just inform my Garmin shop that if the next firmware doesn't improve the drain I want a new watch.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1471694.jpg
  • RobKenjiwhe I too think it's software rather than hw my battery drain seemed to be relatively under control with the 6.62 beta but now with the 6.64 and 2.31 sensor beta the drain is up again

I have 87 hours up time and 86 mins GPS usage since charge and am at 32% remaining so .8% per hour. Whereas on 6.62 I got 5 hrs GPS to take me to 26%
  • I have a fenix 5 Plus sapphire since about one week now, updated it to 6.00 (no beta) and I did not face drain issues yet (did six activities with GPS).
I noticed that bluetooth is sucking relatively a bit of energy: with bluetooth on, I have 0.3-0.5%/h, without bluetooth 0.2-0.4%. Exact values are difficult to say, as it's always an average (I use the Battery Widget). Will try to keep an eye on it and repost if any news.
  • JanH that sounds good I am currently at 73% after 48 hrs with 68 mins GPS - so .8% per hour. Seems to be some sort of post GPS activity drain not sure why
  • I don't think it's GPS;
