Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • Smartwatch-Mode, 3 activities/week; no GPS; bluetooth: a few minutes/day for synchronize:

my old Fenix 5: 15-20 days!
my new Fenix 5 Plus: 6 days (0,6%/hour)

My hope for Fenix Plus was min. 10-11 days
Do you think it´s a hard- or a firmwareproblem? Should I send it back and try again?
Or could it be a settings-problem (but I use the same settings like for Fenix 5)? Maybe wifi?

...turned off wifi (since I use the App via BT) and installed Battery Widget and charged the watch a second time.
Battery improved dramatically! I am 20 hours after my last charge and still have 94% battery left!

    How can I disable wifi?
  • you can see from garmin help, just use google, according to issues, i think that all issues cannot be fixed with firmware.
  • I am totally disappointed about the battery lifetime.
I "upgraded" from FR935 to fenix 5 plus. In 935 I never had to think about what kind of watchface or widget is installed. Now on the 5 plus it seems to be a very important fact for impacting battery life. Why? Bad software implementation?
But also with no additional features installed the battery life is definitely not satisfying.
Music, maps and smart functions are nice additional features, but this is intended to be a sports(!) watch and therefore I need to be independent from recharging in short cycles. 935 did this job very good, also not perfect. Not so this very expensive and heavy toy.
For sports the is no need to buy it for replacing my years older watch. There is no notable increased sports related accuracy or function. It is clunky on the wrist and sapphire glass is hard to read. Love the Instinct display. Indeed!
Regarding battery lifetime, I tested the third(!) fenix 5 plus. They all had the same bad battery lifetime.
I think about selling the fenix and going back to my old 935. Or maybe giving Polar a new chance after many years pausing. Back to the roots?
  • I also upgraded from a 935 to a 5+. I did it for looks and Garmin Pay. In hindsight I believe this was a downgrade. While the 5+ looks great, the bezel scratches easily and the battery is much lower. This cost me £700.

In 14 months of using the 935 every day it was spotless and battery lasted around 10-14 days depending on activities.

Garmin got it wrong with the Plus models and I hope the 6 fixes these issues. The price needs to drop as it’s it’s simply too expensive for what it is.
  • Surely you knew about the difference in battery life before you moved to the 5+?

Scratching the bezel on either the 935 or the 5+ is a function of the user. Whether it scratches easier on the 5+ compared to the 935 is moot generally. They are sports watches after all and tend to be used in environments where scratching is highly likely. However, I'd like to see some test results that have objectively measured the difference between the bezels before commenting on any perceptions.
  • Is it possible to disable WIFI completely? [TABLE]

  • philipshambrook - aside from the durabilty of the bezel I have found that i certainly knock or scrape the 5+ far more often than the 935 - I think this is because of the significant extra thickness ( I am not particularly clumsy :) ) at present the bezel is not showing signs of wear and seems to be fairly durable in normal use

I don't agree :) the 935 was bashed into all sorts of things and was spotless after 14 months. I knocked my 5+ with a plastic lid and it now has a massive scratch. Yes I know it's a sports and I expect dinks and scuffs watch but I expected more from a £700 watch.
  • Having sent my Fenix 5+ back to Garmin because of excessive battery drain. The replacement that I began using at 5:30am last Friday is showing a 25% drain. This is after an hours run, 2 two hour strength sessions and a 30 min treadmill session, along with wifi sync. I do not use the watch for notification as I do not need it. The next test will be to use Music and see how the drain is. What does not appear to be happening is high drain after an activity.
  • Chrisly - think the best you can do is disable auto-upload under wifi settings on the watch and / or GC. I do this and just sync manually if im not using BT.

As for the other recent comments - I agree with philipshambrook, I am not sure why anyone is comparing the battery life to the Fenix 5 or FR935 when Garmin stated it would be less, both GPS and in smartwatch mode. I'm generally happy with mine but if some of you are only getting a couple of days as claimed with little use then there's clearly a fault so I would contact Garmin - in my experience they have been great and replaced quickly under RMA for a previous watch I have owned.

As for scratches - it's a rugged outdoor trail / tri watch! See them as signs of hard work and good efforts :-) I believe the titanium version is actually more susceptible compared to the sapphire. Mine is still spotless after 4 months but prob down to luck. The reason I went for my previous F5 over the 935 is because of looks and feel. The FR just felt too light and fragile with buttons that would get stuck (known issue for some unfortunately) and no sapphire offering. Not slating the watch at all (it's fantastic), it just wasn't for me.

I'll stop though, because this is a thread on battery life :-)
