Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • That's what I want to see. ;)

Was this with notifications and heart rate monitor on? Did you wear the watch the whole day? Thanks!

That is using the built in HR monitor and with all smart notifications on. Worn all day and night except for a half hour to charge. A hiking activity of an hour and a used another 5% or so.
  • Hi, I have used a very good byttery meter on my 935.
Now on my 5s Plus, this doesnt work.
So I asked the developer and he was so kind to make it compatible wit the plus models.

But he can't test it because of no own plus model....

I also emailed him a few days ago to ask if he’d update the widget for the 5+ series. I’ve already emailed him to say the widget is working well so far on my 5+ :D
  • Look at the Garmin apps.... now there is an update !!!!
  • I have the regular Fenix 5 plus Sapphire black on it's first full charge.

I'm not sure where they get 12 days from, I'm on day 5 with one 50 minute strength session tracked, 24/7 activity and sleep monitoring, the Garmin Premium HRM chest strap paired with Ant+, and I'm down to 49% remaining battery life.

I still love the watch but the battery life is less than expected so far. It's also likely to reduce more when I resume my 6 days a week training sessions because I am currently sick.

I use the standard watch face with heart rate and calories being displayed constantly. To be fair though, I did initially play with it more as with any new gadget so maybe it will get better. The things I like so far are the customizable strength workouts and the superior optical heart rate sensor compared to my old Fitbit.

I've just installed the 3.21 BETA. Interestingly, my battery dropped from 93% to 87%. Maybe they've changed something? I cant imagine a 2 minute update would zap 5%, given that it's charging while connected to the PC for file transfer?

Mine hasn't dropped at all during the update. It was 58% before and it was 58% after. That just shows battery meter is weird, especially with reboots. Me and others mentioned before that just rebooting the watch right after the charging would easily bring battery from 100% to 95-92% range.
  • Yesterday I completed a 1 hour 10 minute strength workout with 24 sets and lost only 2% battery life with the chest strap. It appears that the workout battery life is amazing, while watch mode drains about 12% in 24 hours with no usage whatsoever.

I have altitude, calories, heart rate, date and the time with seconds on the stock watch face with otherwise stock settings. Does this battery life sound right for a regular 5 plus or is their something wrong with my unit.

Also am I correct in assuming that a paired Ant+ chest strap should not affect battery life in watch mode, since it is not searching for it's signal constantly. Wifi is enabled but based on my understanding should only be activated to check for updates or to sync activities. Bluetooth is paired and enabled 24/7 for syncing. Backlight is 20% with 8 sec timeout.

I too am noticing that workouts get better battery life than just using the watch. I wonder if having HR on the watch face is the culprit.
  • I'm still on the first full charge, others earlier on mentioned connect iq widgets and faces causing their drain, and after removing them they got apx. 8%/24 hour in watch mode, however I only use the stock face with no widgets and still get nearly twice the drain at 15%/24 hours.

For the people who got it down to 8%/24h, I'd love to know about what sensors, wifi settings, bluetooth settings, display backlight settings, activity tracking settings, and watch face settings are being used. I doubt my unit is faulty with it being a new product with probably a recently manufactured battery, however, I have to get to the bottom of this as the battery life is coming up short for some reason.
