Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model

  • I could see why BT, even BLE would use up a little more battery, but not why Galileo would (over GPS+GLONAS). At least on the F5 it's the same GPS chip set, although I have not used Galileo enough yet to notice a battery drain. Still on the fence with this though. Plus, should I really be road running with earbuds in? Even trail running. I'll probably do it though ;-)
  • Yes, GPS+GLONASS should be similar to GPS+Galileo; about 20% more than GPS only. It’s really the music that spanks the battery, to the tune of about 6-8% battery per hour on the 5+ variant (but that’s if I can trust the battery gauge.....).

[A bit OT, but you can still get situational awareness whilst listening to music with the AfterShokz Tekz Air bone conducting headphones or the Plantronics Backbeat Fit 3100 with their Always Aware system.]
  • The extra battery usage from GPS are due to the processing power required to calculate a 3-Dimensional position from the satellite signals. "Using GPS" is not an active signal output from the watch but instead is seen as a large battery drain due to the calculations necessary to resolve a precise position fix. When you use multiple satellite constellations you have to do more calculations to resolve those positions. I would expect to see a very slightly higher usage from dual constellation GPS as opposed to single constellation, but not nearly as big of a difference as music or no GPS.

Well, yes, but my point was that GPS+GLONAS vs GPS+Galileo should be very comparable.
  • 75% after 4.5days exactly with 40mins of GPS.

I charged back to full from 40 odd percent.

Really impressed with the 5 plus.
  • 63% now after 5.5days and a total of 1hr 30mins of GPS.

This is really good battery life. I'm heading for 14days with 3hrs of GPS at this rate.

Really hope it doesn't just dive.

Note: my second charge from 40ish % after receiving a completely dead watch.

Hopefully someone can help me out. Battery life on my new 5s+ has been bad since I've got it. Without any third part apps/widgets etc, I get about 35 hours without any activity.
    • Without bluetooth: Now I've discovered that if I reboot my device and DO NOT enable bluetooth the battery is really good about 0.3% an hour (when sleeping).
    • With bluetooth enabled: If I enable bluetooth it drains about 3% an hour while sleeping, this is without ANY notification and my iPhone in DND mode.
I tried both 5.10 and 5.57 beta, no difference noted. Is there anything I can do to improve battery-life in smartwatch mode?

    p.s. Using iPhone 8 IOS 12.1
  • Any update on this?

I think I've tried everything. Turned lot of features OFF, including OHR, BT, Wifi, etc. Nothing helped. The watch consumes about 1.5 percent per hour. Pretty bad. The bigger battery was major driver for me to buy 5X. Unfortunately I don't believe it can last 20 days in watch mode.

However, I still believe it is a firmware issue and it is fixable.
  • Well I hope it's a firmware issue and therefore fixable, but it's been a while and there have been a few firmware updates. So why have they not fixed it?
  • 7 days now and 57%. On 5 plus.

Battery just seems to be getting better! Expecting it to randomly turned off before hitting 0.

I wish Garmin would speak to their network guys to sort the traffic managers/load balaners so they don't lose the login cookie that keeps logging me out.
